Commercial Description:
The Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale is a Strong Golden Belgian style ale highly hopped with American hops (Ahtanum, Amarillo and Simcoe). The beer pours pale golden with a thick and creamy white head of foam. The aroma is full of depth: nuances of pepper, clove, and banana from the Belgian yeast strain, and the resiny citrus notes from the American hops blend together nicely to provide a complex aromatic character. The taste is spicy, hoppy and fruity, with a very dry and a pleasant bitter end. The bitterness lingers nicely, and provides a refreshing finish that leads you to want to drink more and more of this beer!

Bottle. Moderate malt aromas of roasted and caramel, lemon peel for the hops, barnyard for the yeast, with hints of apple, white wine and clove. Head is thin, wispy, white with virtually no lacing and is fully diminishing. Color is hazy amber/orange. Flavor starts moderately sweet and lightly acidic, then finishes moderately acidic and bitter. Palate is medium, oily with a lively carbonation and a lightly dry finish. What a great combination of aromas and flavors in this Belgian Strong Ale.

(bottle). Pours a clear, light amber color with particles floating. Medium size off white head. Citrus hop aroma. Spiced flavor. Avg duration. Slick texture. Slightly astringent. Soft carbonation.

Bottle. Poured a hazy amber-gold with a miniscule white head. Aroma of banana, yeast, sweet malt, citrus, and perhaps vanilla. Very nice aroma. Flavor wasn’t great, barely good for me. I just don’t really like hoppy Belgian style beers; or most of them for that matter. Dry and yeasty, with some fruit and earth/spice in the finish.

Draft at Stone Bistro. A hazy amber beer with no head. The aroma is sweet malty combined with notes of caramel and lighter notes of spices. The flavor is sweet with ntoes of malt, caramel, and alcohol.

22 oz bomber from Market of Choice. I figured since we’re just a couple months away from the release of the 09/09/09 that I should finally give this one a shot. Pours out vivid yellow with a moderate white head and quite a bit of lacing. Aroma was some coriander and a little bit of floral hops. Flavor was spicy, some pepper and a little yeast with more floral and citrus hop bite than you’d expect from the style. Nice unique twist on a Belgian from Stone.

This is probably the most complex beer that I’ve been able to tell what the complexities where. Partly a hop heavy IPA type flavor and mouthfeel, yet a spicy (coriander?) malty tastes as well. Very good. Obviously I couldn’t wait ’til 12.12.12.

22oz bomber 6/14/09 (Courtesy of RSRIZZO)-Pours a hazy amberish golden with small floaties. Aroma of yeast, sour, hay, and slight citrus. Taste starts with Belgian yeast and a bit of sourness then goes to a bit of hops and finishes very dry. This medium bodied brew is not bad but not one of the better Vertical epics. Still very tasty.

Nice fruity nose with dancing notes of bananas and cloves intermingling with hints of citrus hops and a lingering spiciness with a touch of yeast. Hops were present in the flavor initially, and then seemed to fade into the background as the fruity esters came through. Alcohol is well-hidden.
