Commercial Description:
This is quite a complex and layered beer. Bold and smooth chocolate malt flavors combine with a Belgian yeast lending tropical fruit/banana flavors and hints of spiciness, all complemented by citrus notes from an addition of tangerine peel. Rich vanilla beans add a nice counter to the chocolate malt - actually enhancing the chocolatiness. The finish is smooth, with additional traces of vanilla and toasted characters from French Oak. The goal for this edition of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series is to be reminiscent of artisanal chocolates accentuated with orange.

This really isn’t a bad beer. I’d drink it on a regular basis if it were priced for that sort of drinking. Nice roast actually goes well with the faint citrus. I like this one.

22oz. Bottle: Complex aroma of chocolate, wood, patchouli, light smoke, roasting, charcoal, and Belgian yeast. Poured very very dark brown/ruby in color with a large, creamy, rocky, brown head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is light to medium bitter and slightly sweet. Tastes of roasted malts, chocolate, bitter coffee, tobacco, charcoal, wood, light Belgian yeast, slight molasses, and a hint of clove. Medium body. Smooth, slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Roasted malt, wood, charcoal, and chocolate finish is lightly dry. 8.7%ABV is completely hidden.

Bottle. Toffee colored beer with ruby highlights and a tan head. Malt and light earthy aroma with light roast. Malt and chocolate flavor with light spice and light earthiness. Medium-plus bodied. Chocolate and light spice lingers with light earth and light hops.

Bottle. Pours a dark, hazy color with a small, frothy brown head. Aromas of chocolate, bananas, orange, and roasted malts. Moderate mouthfeel with a nice, slick start that ends with a creamy, sticky finish. Flavors of vanilla, grapefruit, hints of chocolate, and some malts. Very good beer, most likely will age well!

Pours very dark with a big light brown head, excellent lacing. The aroma is belgian, must be the yeast, sweet raisin/clove, banana/bubble gum. The initial flavor is a little roasted, a little bitter, hints of strong coffee. The body is creamy with a slight dryness. Not getting all the flavors, vanilla, chocolate or spices - hopefully they will come with age.

Source:16 oz pour at Broadway Brewhouse.
Glass:Pint.
Appearance:Dark brown pour with a thin tan head.
Aroma:Chocolate and earth with a hint of sugar.
Flavor:Chocolate and roast with a smokey finish.
Palate:Full body with soft carbonation.
Overall:This was definitely different. A lot of competing flavors and aromas. Not bad, but not good.

22 oz bottle from MCAS Miramar Marine Mart: Black-brown color with a full cocoa froth light brown head. Aroma of rich dark chocolate. Flavor starts rich and chocolaty with a little vanilla followed by a hint of smoke and a sharp coffee and a lingering dry orange rind bitterness in the finish. Full body is rich and creamy with soft carbonation.

This has notes of roast and citrus in the nose, with a touch of vanilla. Pours an opaque black, with a craggy tan head. Flavor is a bit on the sweet side for my tastes, strong roast and chocolate notes, a bit of bitterness blending over to vanilla in the finish. Full mouthfeel. Curious how this one will change over the next couple of years.
