Commercial Description:
This is quite a complex and layered beer. Bold and smooth chocolate malt flavors combine with a Belgian yeast lending tropical fruit/banana flavors and hints of spiciness, all complemented by citrus notes from an addition of tangerine peel. Rich vanilla beans add a nice counter to the chocolate malt - actually enhancing the chocolatiness. The finish is smooth, with additional traces of vanilla and toasted characters from French Oak. The goal for this edition of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series is to be reminiscent of artisanal chocolates accentuated with orange.

Pours with a black body topped by a thick, brown head with a good amount of lacing. It’s bittersweet with light roasty notes. Medium to full bodied and highly carbonated.

Sampled in a 22oz. First one of the XX.XX.XX that I recall being such a dark brew. A really really well crafted beer. Pours deep brown with a thin lacey head. A deep chocolate flavor with some heavy earthy tones. Nicely done.

Bottle from siciliano’s. Dark brown, almost opaque black with thin, creamy beige head. Aroma is chocolate , roasty, semi-sweet, yeasty, nice. Flavor is bakers chocolate, dirty, chalky, heavy pine, bleh. Medium to light, watery body. Okay, but not fantastic.

Bottle. Pours a rich dark brown, with a thin tan head. Aroma is roasted malts, dark chocolate, and Belgian yeast. Notes of bananas, caramel, brown sugar, coffee, and dark fruit. On the palate, it is slightly carbonated. The flavor brings out the chocolate a little more forward and it also pulls out a bit of vanilla. It finishes a bit dry. I actually preferred the 07.07.07 and the 08.08.08 over this one, but it is still pretty good. I do want to age one of these, I can see some potential in allowing this one to sit.

Cracked this open last night. 22oz bottle was laying around for about a month. Had quite the Belgian aroma. Tasted of roasted malt, chocolate, toffee and a bit of Belgian yeast. Poured very dark with a light brown head. Finish was pretty dry. Overall not one of my favorite beers, but I saw potential with aging it.

This really isn’t a bad beer. I’d drink it on a regular basis if it were priced for that sort of drinking. Nice roast actually goes well with the faint citrus. I like this one.

22oz. Bottle: Complex aroma of chocolate, wood, patchouli, light smoke, roasting, charcoal, and Belgian yeast. Poured very very dark brown/ruby in color with a large, creamy, rocky, brown head that lasted throughout. Opaque. Slightly sparkling. Excellent lacing. Flavor is light to medium bitter and slightly sweet. Tastes of roasted malts, chocolate, bitter coffee, tobacco, charcoal, wood, light Belgian yeast, slight molasses, and a hint of clove. Medium body. Smooth, slightly dry texture. Average carbonation. Roasted malt, wood, charcoal, and chocolate finish is lightly dry. 8.7%ABV is completely hidden.

Bottle. Toffee colored beer with ruby highlights and a tan head. Malt and light earthy aroma with light roast. Malt and chocolate flavor with light spice and light earthiness. Medium-plus bodied. Chocolate and light spice lingers with light earth and light hops.
