Commercial Description:
This is quite a complex and layered beer. Bold and smooth chocolate malt flavors combine with a Belgian yeast lending tropical fruit/banana flavors and hints of spiciness, all complemented by citrus notes from an addition of tangerine peel. Rich vanilla beans add a nice counter to the chocolate malt - actually enhancing the chocolatiness. The finish is smooth, with additional traces of vanilla and toasted characters from French Oak. The goal for this edition of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series is to be reminiscent of artisanal chocolates accentuated with orange.

22 oz bomber: pours an opaque black with beige diminishing head, nose is redolent of tobacco, dark chocolate, treacle, quite nice. Very smooth palate, slight citrus quite like a Terry’s chocolate orange, very faint grassy hops but with a solid bitter backbone, slightly smoky, vanilla bourbon towards the finish. Reminiscent of Harviestoun’s Old Engine Ale.

22oz bomber. Pours a shiny dark glass obsidian near black with a nice medium thick creamy frothy khaki head. Aroma of Belgian yeast, cocoa, smooth, not rich, faintly roast, smells creamy, not particularily strong aroma. Flavor is fairly dry, subtle well blened/melded notes, powdery dark chocolate, very dry, bakers chocolate without the bitterness, hint... a hint of bitter peel of some sort, interesting bitter citrus play, charcoal and ash with accompaning hint of fruitiness. Hint of vanilla lingers in the finsh leaving a subtle rich taste. The body is fantastic, smooth and creamy, lightly oily, great texture, medium/full viscousity, larger but soft carbonation 4.5. Finishes very dry, almost ashy, but avoids being too bitter... I wanted a little more from this, still well crafted and very drinkable.

A dark brown beer with a small tan head. The aroma was roasty with just a touch of the Belgian yeast aroma. The taste had a nice roastedness, some Coke taste, chocolate, a touch of vanilla, & no noticeable alcohol. This does taste more like a porter than a Belgian strong ale, but I guess It is a fusion of those styles as a Belgian Imp. Porter. Nice & enjoyable.

Deep brown body with reddish highlights, thin tan head. Nose with oak and vanilla, with banana notes increasing with warming. Sharp, fruity body, with dark fruits, chocolate, clove, banana, and prickly alcohol. Somewhat astringent. Interesting beer, reminds me of Bell’s Hell Hath no Fury with oak and less roastiness. Very good.

Enjoying a bottle on the day of brewing an attempt at its clone. Pours a dark brown with a golden creamy head. No light gets through the glass. Has a vanilla and tangerine aroma. Large body...can taste the chocolate malt and the vanilla on the end along with the tangerine. Great beer...I can only hope ours is close.
