Commercial Description:
This is quite a complex and layered beer. Bold and smooth chocolate malt flavors combine with a Belgian yeast lending tropical fruit/banana flavors and hints of spiciness, all complemented by citrus notes from an addition of tangerine peel. Rich vanilla beans add a nice counter to the chocolate malt - actually enhancing the chocolatiness. The finish is smooth, with additional traces of vanilla and toasted characters from French Oak. The goal for this edition of the Stone Vertical Epic Ale series is to be reminiscent of artisanal chocolates accentuated with orange.

Pours a deep dark brown with a tan head, not much lacing. Aroma is chocolate, graham crackers, bananas, and a little too much spice. Flavor is part roasty and part chocolatey from the malt, with accents of citrus, vanilla, and clove. Interesting but too sweet and a little too thin.

Pours dark with a red-tinged foam. It has the aroma of chocolate and sweet berries. The flavor is dry with berry flavors.

22 ounce bottle. Served in a snifter, the beer pours dark brown/black with about a half inch tan head. Head retention and lacing are both good. It smells like roasted malt, chocolate, caramel, coffee, and some vanilla. Taste is similar to the aroma, but with the addition of some charred malt and smoke, along with a bit of banana. Mouthfeel/body is medium, it’s somewhat creamy and slick with moderate carbonation. Drinkability is good, it’s smooth and goes down easy. Also, the alcohol isn’t noticable in the aroma and taste, however it does catch up to you later. I think this is a good brew, can’t wait to see how this one ages.

Location: 22 oz bottle from a Total Wine, 12/28/09

Aroma: Notes of roasted coffee, chocolate, a bit of earth, some caramel, and a hint of spice and fruit
Appearance: Pours an opaque, dark brown with a bubbly brown head, leaves some lace on the glass
Flavor: The taste has some definite Belgian yeast flavor to it, some bitter chocolate accompanies the full-flavor roasted taste that dominates this beer
Palate: This is a full-bodied beer that has a long duration and soft carbonation
Overall Impression: I really liked what they did here, it is another fine beer from Stone. I kind of want to describe this as a Belgian Porter, as it doesn’t quite feel like a stout. Regardless of what you call it, its pretty tasty. This is the second of the Vertical Epics I have had, and I have really enjoyed them both. I really like the way these beers drink, and I like what Stone is doing with them.

It poured a very dark amber liquid with a small light brown foam that left some lacing. It had a smell of nut, wood, chocolate and crackers. It had a medium smooth mouthfeel with some stingyness. It was a bit sour but not so bad, heard there have been some complaints about the sourness but it didn’t bother me much. It had a thick body and was a bit dry. Taste of wood, nuts and warm alcohol. Lots of different flavours that I couldn’t quite distinguish made it feel complex and interesting.
