There are massive citrusy tones in the aroma and flavor...grapefruit, orange, and lemon. There is not enough sweetness (thankfully so) to make this a barleywine, and the alcohol is barely noticeable. I am happy with this because I don’t think it’s "over the top." To me, this is an improvement over their regular IPA, and maybe even Ruination.

Initially comes accross as a well hopped barleywine but then bitter grapefruit and sweet marmalade give it that extra IPA dimension. alexsdad06 (1098), Ohio, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Nov 14, 2009 3 L bottle. Pours a slightly hazy orange amber color with a medium sized dense cream colored head. The aroma is big on citrus and other fruits along with moderately sweet caramel malts. The flavor is very malty with some signs of the hops that were much more present when fresh. I did get ripe orange citrus and bitter grapefruit to go with caramel/toffee malts. The bitterness is still there in the finish. This has morphed into more of a barleywine; at least it’s a good barleywine. I had the beer fresh and loved it, and this beer is still holding up quite well considering its age and the style. Probably better to drink this soon if you have them around. The hops were very mild for a Stone beer. Almost a barley wine. poured a nice amber color. A very sweet smell and faint hops. A nice flavor overall. well balanced CUJO (367), Brooklyn, New York, USA

While it was clear this was a more complex IPA, I thought the balance was too even. No one flavor or characteristic stood out to me. I plan on going back for this in a full pint. awiseman01 (372), Indianapolis, Indiana, USA

Thank you Sprinkle for parting with this gynormous 3L Bottle, now 3 years old. Guess what? A 3L split 7 ways is still ALOT of Beer! It was a treat to enjoy an entire glass of this stuff (and then some). After Dan the man gave us all a one handed pour, breaking down his right bicep in the process (insert joke about how he’ll have to use the other hand later), we all clinked our glasses in appreciation of our great friend and dove into what was a surprisingly great DIPA after growing for 3 years. Beckons from the glass a golden amber with a foamy, bready off white head. The aroma is very hoppy, bready, and some floral notes. From the first sip I knew for sure buying a swing top 3L 3 years late was not a bad call by any means. Tons of hops still punch through this baby, lots of floral and citrus accompanied by a distinct biscuit/bready flavor that produces a hint of staleness but not enough to negate the hop deliciousness. A very sweet taste overall, maybe some honey. As much as I’d love to try this fresh, that’s never going to happen, and this gem was nothing short of spectacular 3 years behind schedule. Had I tried it fresh I may have scored it close to perfect. If you’re holding onto a bottle, fear not, and open that bad boy up!!!
