Commercial Description:
Our Stone 11th Anniversary Black IPA uses de-husked dark malt imported from Germany and American high alpha hop varieties, including Chinook, with Simcoe and Amarillo hops combined in the dry-hop. These ingredients combine to provide this beer with complex citrus and roast flavors, neither one overwhelming the other, but both intense enough to assure a totally unique and deep flavor profile. It's not a Porter, and it's not a Stout.

Poured dark brown with plenty of lighter copper highlights. The head was tan, two-fingers tall and lasted. Somewhere between "sheets of lacing" and "thick webs of lacing" The aroma was Arrogant Bastard and then they added in some roasted, almost chocolatey malts. The flavor was more of a straightforward IPA in my mind. Aggressive pine/citrus hoppiness with some softer toasted caramel malts. Slight alcohol heat that Stone does quite well. Mouthfeel was thin to medium in body and the finish was dry as a bone. I really liked this one.

Strong citrus aromas, grapefruit peel, with hints of caramelized sugars, a slight roastiness. Pours dark amber brown color with no head. Very hoppy flavor, grapefruit, bitter citrus flavors with a mellow roasty flavor with hints of molasses. The slight roasty flavor of that dark malts mellow the intense hops a bit. There is a slight resin flavor in there too.

Bottle courtesy Gillard. Pours dark brown with a small tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, dark fruit, and ash. Taste is the same as aroma with a hint of citrus. Medium mouthfeel with a moderate amount of bitterness and well hidden alcohol. Very good.

Pours a dark amber brown with a large frothy beige head. Aroma is medium sweet, grapefruit, floral, pineapple and berries. Flavor is sweet grapefruit, pine, earthy, chocolate, caramel, berries and peaches. Long grapefruity bitter finish. Smooth medium-full body, resinous texture.

Deep, early black body with ruby at the edges. A rocky and dense brown tan head is on top. the aroma is up front grapefruit and caramel. There is also some nice hazelnut. The taste is nicely bitter grapefruit mixed with some light chocolate milk. There is also some coffee in here. Wow, a well balanced and interesting beer.
