french tickler (642), Aylmer, Quebec, Canada Mar 12, 2009 Déhusté avec Agaguk et Pyrozoid. Apparence noir pénombre, belle mousse brune collante. Saveur d’alcool, malt brulé, un peu cendré. sloth (1657), Ceciltucky, Co., Maryland, USA Mar 10, 2009 Thin brown head, fair retention, lacing is minimal. Black in color. Usual nose of chocolate, roast and a faint mustiness. Body is med/full and fairly oily on the palate, coating. roast and coffe flavors up front followed by chocolate, lightly sweet caramel, raisins. Dry, choco roast finish. porterhouse (1148), Alna, Maine, USA Mar 10, 2009 (22 oz. bottle (labelled "July 2008") from Kappy’s, cellared for 7 mos. after purchase) Smooth, hot, bitter and chocolatey...Pours thick and inky-looking. Very, very dark brown with a thin purplish-brown head that recedes mostly to edges. Aroma of very dark chocolate, coffee, a bit of molasses and light char. Very fine sheets of lacing melt away quickly. Mouthfeel is quite full, silky smooth and turns sticky in the finish. Flavor of big dark chocolate over some coffee roast and then whoa! a big dose of alcohol comes in right in the middle. The alcohol is strange and almost medicinal. Leaves quite a burn. Big chocolate and coffee. Medium-heavy bitterness rides overtop and through into the finish and aftertaste. Finishes pretty grassy. Very nice mouthfeel and appearance but the alcohol is just too detracting, as is the grassiness. cstuartj (305), Washington, USA Mar 10, 2009 Looks amazingly great in a glass, dark as the pits of hell, huge thick tan head. the beer coats the glass like used motor oil as you swirl it around. The nose is sweet, floral and tones of alcohol. taste is bitter chocolate with a creamy background. great from start to finish. Tweety (337), Vancouver, Washington, USA Mar 9, 2009 Bitter is absolutely right. The chocolate lends it a substantially different bitter quality than normal hops-bittered beers, but it’s very interesting and still very drinkable, a little chalky, but all in all good stuff. HighlanderOne (538), Somewherein, New Jersey, USA Mar 8, 2009 Poured from bottle. Aroma of dark chocolate and fruit. Not quite the head as sen in picture. Pours oily black, thin tan head. Burnt chocolate flavor, like the edge pieces from the brownie pan. Oatmeal gives it a creaminess, alcohol is hardly noticed. Good finish. Great stuff. Brigadier (1212), Chagrin Falls, Ohio, USA Mar 6, 2009 22 oz bottle
This has been sitting for a while. After getting through some of my backlog I cracked it open and wish I had gotten to it sooner. I hope this goes into regular rotation or at least stays on the shelves for a few more months. Most people seem to have tried it but if you haven’t snap it up now. it is worth every penny.
Aroma / Appearance - Creamy black liquid curled around the bottom of the glass slowly filling to the top. An oily sheen of head indicated plenty of life as did the nice sheet of clear lacing. Baker’s chocolate, oatmeal, and a tease of prune melded into a very smooth blend with only a hint of the underlying alcohol.
Flavor / Palate - The texture of liquid brownies filled the mouth. Sticking to the tongue and throat it crawled along with an accompanying flavor of almonds and dark chocolate. Smooth and mellow from start to finish this was a great winter warmer. If I had the time and space I would certainly pick up another bottle.
