HogTownHarry (3922), Toronto (Harbourfront), Ontario, Canada Feb 12, 2009 Bottle (22oz). Shared with blankboy and garthicus. Opaque black pour, decent and lasting creamy/foamy brown head - 4+. Very dry aroma, moderate alcohol, plenty of bitter chocolate and herbal/resin hoppiness, nutshells and some coffee. The taste follows - stronger alcohol, something oddly like cherry-flavoured milk, but it’s about the bitter chocolate, really, some woodsmoke - niiiice. Only average body, slick, somewhat alcoholic and acidic, long bitter resin/chocolate ..... damn that’s nice - packs a punch too. luvpnkflyd (10), Kokomo, Indiana, USA Feb 11, 2009 My favorite! Very thick and creamy. You can deffinitely taste the chocolate. I wish I could get more of it! avatarignis (2), Sacramento, California, USA does not count Feb 10, 2009 Imbibed from a small snifter from Davis Graduate tap.
Color is space black, can easily see my reflection in it. Head is a dark mocha that laces the glass heavily, although the main head dies down after a bit. Smell is slight malt, Jagermeister, dark french-roast coffee. Initial taste is anise, very bitter chocolate. Body is intense roasted malt, dark coffee and dark chocolate. Finishes with slightly citric hops, dark chocolate, and alcohol sensation. Palate feel is very thick, oily, alcohol/anise sensation. Would definitely tear the heavens and earth asunder to get more. nickd717 (1276), Palo Alto, California, USA Feb 9, 2009 Another awesome stout from Stone. Not quite as intense as their Imperial Stout, but very well-done. Pours black with a small beige head. Aroma is sweet roasted malt and bitter chocolate. Lots of dark chocolate on the taste with some coffee and roasted malt. Dangerously drinkable - I feel like I could down a gallon of this stuff (but would regret it as it came back up). Really smooth and fairly full palate. trayns (237), Beverly Hills, Michigan, USA Feb 9, 2009 Updated: Feb 28, 2009Bottle. Pours a great aggressive black with little head. Great sweet malt taste against the big boozy nature of the beer. Top to bottom a classic imperial stout. I don’t get the recent low ratings for this stout. BlackForestCO (819), Fort Collins, Colorado, USA Feb 8, 2009 Bottle. Poured a deep brown/black color with a bubbly quarter-inch tan head that eventually faded to nothing. Aroma of chocolate, some light roasted malts, anise, black licorice, and alcohol. Smooth, sweet entry with a hint of anise and some light roasted maltiness and a bit of chocolate with a light undertone of smoke that finishes with a light bitterness and lingering notes of black licorice. Low carbonation and moderate mouthfeel. The aroma was hard to detect over the alcohol presence, and the flavor was too abrasive to enjoy very much. Hopefully time will smooth this out. hughie (3018), Bedford, Bedfordshire, England Feb 7, 2009 I’ve never seen so many words on a bottle of beer. Wasted several minutes of my life reading them with a magnifying glass and learned little of interest. Oily black colour with a dark brown head. Roasted malt aroma with some sweetness and a hint of alcohol. Chocolate and espresso taste, quite sweet, smooth and oily, with a strong late bitterness. The oatmeal is there, but I probably wouldn’t have noticed it had it not been for the beer’s name. SHIG (2012), Aviano, Italy Feb 6, 2009 Bottle thanks to fata2683: Poured a thick oil black with a chocolate colored head. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malts, and strong coffee bean. The taste is rich with chocolate, coffee, and offseting hops. Very pleased with this beer from start to finish.
