Nalu (32), Washington, USA Jan 21, 2009 Black with fine carbonation and a thin, brown head which quickly disappears. Minimal lace. Strong dark chocolate all the way through to a lingering aftertaste, with some faint fruit flavours in the aroma and malty nose. The oatmeal is very subtle, but there all the way through to the end. The bitter adjective applies primarily to the chocolate part and not the stout itself. A top performer among sweet stouts. dchmela (1406), Orlando, Florida, USA Jan 21, 2009 Bottle courtesy BelgianBeerGal. Pours a thick black oily color with a thin dark tan head. Chocolate malt, oatmeal silkiness, roasted grains and dark fruit aroma. Thick dark chocolate bar, dark fruit taste with a nice oatmeal silkiness. Finishes with a bitter chocolate and coffee dryness. Very good. ryanknock (150), San Francisco, California, USA Jan 19, 2009 A very warm ale, with incredibly powerful coffee, roast and chocolate notes. Burnt character, incredibly bitter, with slight toffee, oatmeal, vanilla, molasses and bark-earth. This is a much dryer and bitter beer than their usual imperial stout, and has a greater hop presence and bitterness in the finish. BeerHawk (1175), Huntsville, Alabama, USA Jan 19, 2009 Bottle. Poured black with a brown head that had a thin layer lasting and light lace. Nice aromas of roast coffee, chocolate, light alcohol, and a hoppy bitter background. The flavor is rich with chocolate, coffee, and roast. Full body with a bitter cofffee aftertaste. Another great impy stout from Stone. matt7215 (942), Cambridge, Ontario, Canada Jan 18, 2009 bomber shared at Tupalev’s KW group tasting. black pour with a small tan head. nice looking stout in the glass. aroma of dark chocolate and hops. the flavour is very much about bitter dark chocolate, other impy stout flavours as well but the dark chocolate stands out from the rest. a thinner mouthfeel then i was expecting and i think a bomber of this wouldnt drink as easy as some other impy stouts. we had the regular stone imperial stout right after this one and i much prefered that. thanks for the bomber share to whoever brought this. JesseM (661), Kitchener-Waterloo, Ontario, Canada Jan 17, 2009 650ml bomber at Tupalev’s, courtesy of Jan Primus I think? Huge thanks to whoever brought this. Pours a deep black with a small white head. Aroma is very much like an Imperial Stout, lots of pen ink and leather, not all that appealing actually. Thankfully the flavour makes up for that. Lots of toffee, caramel, mocha, not too bitter but with some dark chocolate bite throughout. It seems like a slightly rougher, more abrasive version of their Imperial Stout. Quite a tasty stout, though it lacks the smoothness I would have wanted. I’d take their Impy over this anyday, but I’m very glad to have tried it and it is a good beer. mike mcneil (660), St Augustine, Florida, USA Jan 17, 2009 Pours out of the bomber indigo black beneath a thick and creamy dark tan head. Admirable retention with some thin curtains of lacing adhering to the snifter. Rich aromas of dark chocolate, charred wood, caramel, espresso beans and vanilla greet the nose. Palate is quite full and slick (where the oatmeal additions contribute) making this Impy Stout even more enjoyable and authentic. Restrained carbonation adds to the mouthfeels creaminess. Flavor profile was also assertive with upfront notes of semi-sweet dark chocolate, espresso, licorice, molasses and charred oak. Starts out bittersweet and as with most Stone brews shows off a touch of hop bitterness in the finish along with the warming sensation from the 9.2% abv. A slight Belgian-like yeasty sourness sneaks in and is slightly distracting in the end. Overall however a superb anniversary beer. brewandbbq (269), Manchester, New Hampshire, USA Jan 16, 2009 Pours opaque black with a dark brown head that struggled to get out of solution. A stretch pour allowed a half inch head to set up before slowly retreating to a placid surface with sporatic remnants of spongy foam.
Webbed lacework remained throughout the glass.
Aromatics lead off with dark chocolate, espresso, oily oats, and caramel. Hints of smoke, nougat, molasses, and Kahlua follow through.
Full bodied and chewy mouthfeel. Oily, slick, and velvety.
Dark chocolate, coffee grounds, and Kahlua are up front on the pallet. Warming alcohol, brownie batter, and drizzeled chocolate follow through.
Finishes with rich, dark chocoalte, warming alcohol, and an oily viscocity.
A big, chocolaty brew and definately cellar-worthy.
