radagast83 (1269), Fairfax, Virginia, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours extremely thick, pitch, motor oil black color. The head is a dissipating tan color. Aroma is dark chocolate, roasted malts. Flavor is smooth, with the roasted malts really coming through along with the dark chocolates and coffee. The beer has an extremely bitter finish. Not as good as their 11th Anniversary, but quite a feat - better than their Imperial Russian Stout. trevor211 (499), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 7, 2008 Pours thick, motor-oil black with a thin, milk-chocolate colored head. Aroma is chocolate and sweet, slightly roasty malts and cloves. The flavor is delicious - incredibly smooth, brings out the smoky flavor a bit more, and almost feels like it’s melting in your mouth. Syrupy, but the carbonation keeps it from being too sticky. Great stuff, and evidence I’m coming around on stouts... cathcacr (585), Portland, Oregon, USA Sep 7, 2008 Nowhere near the quality of Stone’s 11th Ann. offering. They should have just re-released 11th or added that to their regular lineup, because it was marvelous. This is thick, sticky, black, pretty flavorful liquid with no head to speak of. I thought Stone products had no problems generating head? It’s just a flat, thick liquid with general Imperial Stout flavoring. Just not moved by this one. Not going to be paying $7 for another bottle to see if this one was off, sorry. Cut the damn price or something.
hoppopotamus (182), Santa Cruz, California, USA Sep 7, 2008 Updated: Jun 24, 2009A beautiful jet-black pour with a brown head. Aroma is not as strong as I would like, but there is roast malt and chocolate. The aroma’s got chocolate, burnt toast, coffee, and some alcohol heat near the end. Very chewy. Hops evident in the bitter finish, but not terribly dry/ craftbeerdesign (731), Alpharetta, Georgia, USA Sep 7, 2008 bomber. Stone is awesome. - I seriously love this brewery. This anniversary ale pours a jet black - motor oil consistency with a 1/4" tan head. Aromas of chocolate, coffee and oats. Wonderful dynamic palate... very smooth with tons of flavors... coffee, caramel, oatmeal, chocolate, alcohol and a wonderful bitter finish. The hops really come through on the back and add an added dimension to this beer. Too bad this is a one time brew.... it is one of my favorites... coldbrewky (716), Saugerties, New York, USA Sep 7, 2008 Bomber at the rip and run. Late night consumption and a heavy pour yeilds a viscous black brew topped with a shimmering tan head that screams heavily roasted dark malts with a good halo of cocoa scents. Body is built upon the sae heavy handed malt bill with an oatmeal chewiness. The bitter chocolate and hops blend well to intensify the dryness. A masterful use of chocolate for the lack of abundant hops. Slight booziness in nose is well hidden in creamy then bitter body. A distinct brew that utilizes a lesser used twist to the impys expertly. jsquire (2086), St. Marys, Ohio, USA Sep 7, 2008 Dark beer with a foamy brown head that shrinks to an attractive whisp. Nose of Baker’s chocolate, alcohol and an almost smokey roast grain. Flavors of big burnt toast, bitter chocolate, ashes, nocitable alcohol and grassy hops. The chocolate is more subtle than expected. This is a really nice big stout. tturner (103), , Washington, USA Sep 6, 2008 extremely dark and coffee in appearance. lacy oatmeal residue. a long lasting head. very strong and a lot of bitter. long, huge, bitter lingering finish. a bit out of balance and hard to find the subtleties, but still a well crafted beer.
