tgncc (796), Bellmore, New York, USA Sep 5, 2008 The aroma on thi beer is very, VERY chocolate. Some malts, oatmeal and some roasted coffee is evident. Very enticing. The appearance is nearly jet black, with a medium to dark brown head. The flavor very roasty, and has strong notes of oatmeal. Very thick mouthfeel. The palate is left with a nice roastyness, and some lingering hops. Great beer. A little pricey at $8.99 for the bomber, but all beer is so damn expensive anymore. drfabulous (1212), Columbia, Missouri, USA Sep 5, 2008 Wow. Lots of chocolate. Very rich. Very dark. Very creamy. The taste sits for a long time in my mouth. Awesome. Why did I buy only one bottle? What an idiot. I should have stocked up on this one. Excellent. kelsmj (10), , Indiana, USA Sep 5, 2008 Tastes like a very dark roast colombian coffee with a little bit of chocolate. Very dark pour with little head. Had a slight bitter after taste. I would buy again. StFun (535), Indiana, USA Sep 4, 2008 Updated: Dec 25, 2008Very nice brew. Thick, rich, creamy. Pours an inky black with almost no head. The chocolate and oatmeal aren’t as strong as the cream. Nice grain profile. Strong ashy taste that actually works in favor of the beer. The is a big big beer in almost every way. Not too sure about the bitter aspect, as it didn’t seem that way to me. Boozy in spots, as is normal for Stone beers. Overall, I liked this one a lot and am glad I bought multiple bottles! ross (1709), weddington, South Carolina, USA Sep 4, 2008 Bottle from Sean. I thought I would open this and watch the RNC tonight. Man that Palin is a VPILF. Black colored pour, tan head. Typical stout pour - nothing new here. Smell is sweet, full of chocolate, roasted malts, some caramel flavors, and of course, a little bit of hops. Taste is sweet and somewhat bitter, incredibly thick and smooth. Almost too much carbonation at times, but all in all it seems very good. Honestly I cant tell much difference between this and the RIS. Its good, really good. Not much else to say. Glouglouburp (2778), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Sep 3, 2008 In short: A highly roasted black chocolate stout with a good bitter hops bite. Nothing more, nothing less. Very good at what it is.
How: Tap at Blind Tiger Ale House NYC (3.9) and fresh bottle (3.7)
The look: Black body toppedy by a long-lasting medium tan head
In long: Roastiness level on the high side of things without being extreme. Crunchy bitter black chocolate abound. Not the smooth round chocolate, this is high-cacao % bitter black chocolate I’m talking about. Fruity notes, coffee notes or anything else are nowhere to be found. This is roastiness and black-chocolate. Despite all that the beer had a good bitter hops bite that went above the inherent black chocolate bitterness. Of all the classic respected black chocolate stouts (Brooklyn, Southern Tier Choklat, Youngs, Rogue) this one is probably the less creamy and round and in a way the less pure chocolaty of them all. Certainly not as rich and decadent as a Brooklyn or even less a Choklat the Stone 12th is nonetheless a pleasant addition to the genre. Anyway you know what you’re in for when you order a beer called “Bitter Chocolate Stout”. If only all beers would be named with such honest self-descriptive name. That would be cool. A Fantôme would need to have its name printed in separate a booklet attached to the bottle and would contain a bunch of 15 letter words. Pitch black, tan head -- pretty beer. Flavor is black cherry ice cream with dark chocolate chocolate chips. End of story. Nice thick mouthfeel; a lot better than I expected. Wish I had a bottle or two sitting around. BuckeyeBoy (1639), Boise, Idaho, USA Sep 2, 2008 On tap Boise Flying Pie. Pours out a nice black topped with a tall tan head. Aroma of sweet molasses and alot of dark roast. Tast a of bitter dark chocolate and plenty of thick oats. YES I love the thick oat feeling. A nice brew. I have a couple of them in the cellar. I hope they will keep getting better.
