Bittersweet chocolate licorice nose rides soft waves of black currant and vanilla oat. Swirls of sugary coffee play out at room temp. Black chocolate and dark coffee berry flavors round to a bittersweet and smooth oatmeal-like finish. Full bodied and oily with medium carbonation. Happy 12th Stone. Loved it! This was a favourite of my San Francisco trip. Too bad it will eventually be retired. Aroma is full of chocolate, coffee beans, also vanilla and black licorice. This has all the wonderful smoothness of oatmeal stout, but the complexities of imperial stouts. I taste full out dark chocolate with many subtleties, coffee, espresso, bitterness...wow. grant (792), Long Beach, CA/Colorado Springs, Colorado, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 26, 2008 Dark, cloudy brown, shy crema head. Medium roasted coffee, dark chocolate and raisins in aroma, very earthy. Initially creamy and full, round feel, switching into a fully roasty flavor, tons of roast here, but not ashen. Like sipping espresso and eating some good dark chocolate at the same time, all with a bit of tartness. Full and effusive, nicely done. Long lasting, moderately bittered finished. This one is not what I hoped it would be, but still decent. Poured pitch black w/tan head. Aroma and taste is dark chocolate. Had a smokey flavor to it as well. Poured a healthy blacker-than-midnight black into the glass. Chocolate, cherries, rum on the nose. Smooth mouthfeel with slight carbonation and a slightly oily slick presence. Flavour was wheaty, milky, creamy, hoppy, dry and bitter. Was hoping for a little bit more of a "bang!" in the finish. I dug this beer, although l liked Stone’s 11th Ann. IBA a bit more. | 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Aug 25, 2008 650ml bottle. Dark brown, close to black body with a firm beige head. Aroma is roasted malt, coffee and chocolate. Flavor is quite sweet, light roasted malt, coffee, and bitter chocolate. A very good balance between bitterness and chocolate, I find the flavor more like chocolate beans and cacao rather than milk chocolate, which suits this beer fine. A bit short finish, but very pleasant.
