vacantskies (79), Spokane, Washington, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours dark and smooth. Aroma non-descript. Intial flavor is semi sweet chocalate. The finish is bitter as promised. Still very good. rauchbier (2993), Isle Of Beer, Lincolnshire, England Aug 12, 2008 Cask at GBBF 08. Jet black, low white head and low but fine condition. Pleasant mix of roast coffee and chocolate in the nose, full bodied sweet chocolate notes in the mouth with a balance of roasted bitter coffee and a hint of liquorice that lingers sweetly in the finish again to be balanced with a delicate coffee bitterness BrewDad (2363), Olympia, Washington, USA Aug 12, 2008 22oz Bomber - Gravity Beer Market - Olympia, WA
Aroma – Huge dark malts with a chocolate and coffee aromas.
Appearance – Black in Color, Thin head and clear (If you can see through black).
Flavor – A huge beer the flavor was great. Get out the sweet dark chocolate candy and eat them with this beer. Great dark malts added oats and the chocolate was wonderful.
Palate – Great Mouthfeel, Nice texture with a Good dry finish.
Overall – This beer will mix well with berries and other fruits and add some Lambics and sour beers this will be a great mix beer also. A wonderful beer to itself and I will hold on to a few for a great night of beer and chocolate.
estoppel (1028), Buffalo, New York, USA Aug 12, 2008 Bottle. Black body, stouty nose, good solid dark tan head. Creamy, oily mouthfeel, hides alcohol well, good stout flavors but less than you might expect for a big beer. Very drinkable with no flavor flaws. Not particularly bitter. cgarvieuk (4159), Edinburgh, Scotland Aug 12, 2008 Updated: Jan 22, 2009Cask at GBBF 2008 ... deep deep oily black ... pours like 12 year old oil ... light sweet smooth malt nose .. thick sweet chocolate malts little vanilla 3.6... Bottle at home ... solid black thick tan head ... roast malts little chocolate little vanilla in nose ... quite bitter up front ... too much for me ... again roast malts ... allmost an motor oil flavour ... 3.5 glkaiser (1150), Seattle, Washington, USA Aug 12, 2008 Subtle roast with smooth chocolate. A little coffee. A bit harsh at times...no head and a bit oily. Smooth with a bit of dark fruit and alcohol. Enjoyable. Wegro (218), Fresno, California, USA Aug 12, 2008 Smells like an impy stout and looks like one too. great tan colored head on it. flavor is nice with burnt coffee and some semi sweet chocolate notes. the bitter finish is pretty nice, totally overpowers the semi sweet thing going on. alcohol flavor is very apparent, i didn’t mind it at first but it got annoying. this might be one of those "better after some age" beers. also, i’m biased and don’t go crazy for imperial stouts anyway. i’m glad i tried it anyway. BrotherGrendel (551), San Diego (La Jolla), California, USA Aug 12, 2008 Pours the darkest of browns with an immense tan foam head that sustains, moderate lacing. Smell is deep bittersweet chocolate and lighter coffee malts alongside a stiff alcohol presence, hints of roast malts. Taste is initially full of dark bittersweet chocolate which dominates throughout, opens up to some sweet malts and touches of espresso and roast malts, hints of dark fruits, oatmeal grains, and earthy hops for balance, finishes with a moderate alcohol warming sensation. Palate is full-bodied, smooth velvety texture, ample carbonation. Overall, a moderate, well-balanced semi-sweet stout with a considerable alcohol boost, not in the top tier for this style but a must-have for any dark chocolate lovers.
