| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 6/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Jul 23, 2008 22 oz bottle generously shared by tjthresh. Pour is deep black with a thin ring of a tan head. Aroma of bitter dark chocolate. Some cocoa sweetness is in there as well. Decent punch of alcohol in the nose as it opens up. Taste is roasted bitter espresso, quite dry and some raw dark chocolate. On top of the bitter chocolate is a layer of bitter hops. Palate is medium full and mouth coating. The oats play a big part here, making this very smooth and almost oily. Finish and aftertaste has a whole bunch of alcohol heat. There is a ton going on in this one, and was not terribly well integrated in my opinion. I think some time would serve this one well. Thanks for bringing this back for us Tom! | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 2, 2008 On tap Boise Flying Pie. Pours out a nice black topped with a tall tan head. Aroma of sweet molasses and alot of dark roast. Tast a of bitter dark chocolate and plenty of thick oats. YES I love the thick oat feeling. A nice brew. I have a couple of them in the cellar. I hope they will keep getting better. JB175 (1664), Bucks County, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.6 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 14/20 | Jul 26, 2008 Blackish pour with a medium head. Aroma has some sweetness to go along with the chocolate, roast, and licorice. Very inviting. Flavor is as advertized - Bitter. A bit too much dry bitterness in my opinion for a big stout, but it acquits itself nicely with some roast, dark chocolate, and light coffee. Solid - certainly not my favorite from Stone, but its still better than most. Different in a good way! hayduke (1655), Eureka, California, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 18/20 | Aug 29, 2008 From a 22 oz bottle, this poured poured like old motor oil into my Duvel Glass and was a very dark brown (almost black) with very thick tan head and very sticky lacing. Nose is coffee, chocolate, and ripe figs. Mouthfeel is very full bodied. Flavor is very rich with chocolate and ripe fruit and some alcohol. In the finish you detect for the first time a tiny bit of hops in the slight bitterness. This is simply a great beer. | 3.4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 12/20 | Nov 17, 2008 Bomber. Pours black oil with dark brown head. Sweet chocolate nose and some roast malt. Lots of roast malt in the flavor and bitter chocolate. Alcohol is evident. Medium full body with moderately low carbonation. Could use some cellaring I think. NachlamSie (1642), Tennessee, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 18/20 | Sep 1, 2008 bomber split with BossHossBikes. Pours inky black with a modest dark tan head. The aroma is lacking in strength, but is very nice. I especially enjoy the use of oats on this. An ashy, toasted oat quality is found along with definite chocolate and coffee. The mouthfeel on this is slick and oily, just perfect for the flavor profile. My favorite thing about this is the sharpness. It’s clean and delightful and accents any smokier qualities this beer may have. The finish is chocolaty and offsets everything harmoniously. If I dig deep enough, I find a stray piny hop here and there. This is really a delicious brew.
