Hardly any carbonation, the body is extremely thick, almost syrupy as comes out of the bottle into the glass. Taste is rich, alcohol infused, caramel, coffee grounds, burnt toast. Aroma is the same, noticeable alcohol and bready. Dark fruits, cherries and overripe apples. After a long day of tasting beers, this was by far the best one. timsilvia32 (447), from Michigan now in Charlotte, North Carolina, USA

Smell some mocha and toasted malts, slight alcohol. Had some coffee and roasted malt, more baker’s chocolate/dark chocolate. The alcohol is not real well hidden, but I don’t really expect that in a RIS. Warm finish of alcohol, coffee, some bitter chocolate lingers. A little astringent. Could have had a little more sweet malt, dark red fruits, but still pretty good. HonkeyBra (1361), Lemont, Illinois, USA

Aroma of hot chocolate, bakers chocolate, sharpie, and a bit of lactose sweetness. Sweet dark chocolate taste. It’s creamy with a bitter hop and bitter chocolate bite. Good balance. Nice mouthfeel with bitter finish with some alcohol. I’ve been looking forward to trying this for a while and it didn’t disappoint. In fact, I’m going to pick up some more of this and cellar it. This sucker is so dense that the bottle is heavy! Excellent appearance. Solid black color with a reddish-brown head. Bitter, sweet, alcoholic aroma. Easy drinking. Thick and meaty oatmeal, chocolaty, and a little fruity. Spicy, effervescent at the back of the throat. Very viscous! sbybeerguy (2), California, USA does not count | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Aug 15, 2008 pours extremely dark with little to no head. aroma of cocao and chcocolate on the nose. slightly bitter 1st impression and follows with extremely smooth chocolate/cocao/creamy notes and a wonderful rich mouth feel. despite an over 9%, alcohol is very well hidden. really loved in the bottle and REALLY loved it on tap over at stone brewery. will definitely get more! | 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 20, 2008 Pours as black as motor oil with a dark brown frothy head. Aromas of sweet chocolate, cocoa, hops, and barely. The flavor is of bitter chocolate but with a slight sweetness. There is a noticeable alcohol taste and burnt malt. The hops come through in the flavor but under all the other flavors. Other flavors of liquorice and coffee. Bitter end and well balanced. Milky texture and smooth. A good stout! chrisafari (100), Orange, California, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 10, 2008 Pours dark black with a thin dark brown head. Aroma of alcohol and chocolate malt, sweet. Flavor of rich, deep, dark chocolate. The flavor is NOT like sweet and sugary (milk) chocolate, but more intense deep cocoa. Flavor also begins mild and sweet alcohol then the chocolate notes develop. Finish is dry with a thick full palate. Very good! Not what I was expecting.
