Taste- thick malt sweetness quickly overcome by huge bittering hops that cuts through the malt with a resiny scythe. Still pretty hot, this finishes with a hop/booze heat and dryness but still has a thick mouthfeel of caramel. caresville (106), Vernon, New Jersey, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 15/20 | Oct 2, 2009 pours dark brown with a little tan head. smells of forests, roasted nuts, grapefruits and toffee. tastes like a burning bitter forest of pine trees (but in a good way). its very bitter and really does remind me of a cooked grapefruit. satisfying and refreshing though, overall another good one from the guys at stone. carl4beer (409), Fairfax Station, Virginia, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 9/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Oct 2, 2009 pours a dark ruby red with small off white thick head. aroma is dominated with pine with some citrus and dried fruit. mouthful is very hoppy with a seriously chewy sticky backbone of unfermented sugars. a little heavy on the palate... | 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 8/10 | 2/5 | 15/20 | Oct 2, 2009 Bottle. Pours a deep, dark crimson with a grumpy pile of foam for a head. The aroma is thick and woodsy, like an oily campfire. The certainly has a robust claim in the flavor as well, with a thick, syrupy citrus thing that makes me think about what cooked grapefruit might taste like, compiled with a rich sugary base. But the beer lacks a bit in body for such a presumably big brew, leaving me somewhat unsatisfied. (#3690, 10/2/2009) mar (1972), Dallas, Texas, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 1, 2009 Deep brown with ruby hints and a beige head. Nose is grapefruity hops and great esters. Not bad on the palate with a grapefruity hop flavor and a slightly bitter finish. drfabulous (1276), Columbia, Missouri, USA

| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Sep 30, 2009 Not what I expected, it’s darker and hoppier than what I thought I’d get, altogether good surprises. The other flavor characteristics definitely hide behind the hops, but they’re there and make for a nicely layered brew. hobbersr (416), Lethbridge, Alberta, Canada

Aroma is overtly hoppy, yet chocolaty and roasty. Pine citrus, chocolate and coffee. The taste is very nice and very similar to the nose. Chocolate and hops. Works in a very harmonious way. A very good black IPA/American Strong.
