The aroma is hoppy, though with a noticible malt base...much more than in the flavor. This one is an unusual variation on the hop-bomb...it’s tons of biting, very bitter hops but not a lot of the citrus or grapefruit flavors. A lot of heat, pepper, and a touch of metallic flavors. I certainly enjoyed drinking this one, though it’s not a favorite. 41cubs (141), , New Jersey, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 6/10 | 5/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Jul 27, 2009 Smells of alcohol, pine, strong acidic citrus, and rum cake. Looks like Gosling’s dark rum; a perfect middle between ruddy dark brown and garnet with a tan/ indian red mix head. Flavor is big piney bitter hops and some oatmeal cookie and toffee (thank god so your tongue doesn’t submit and retreat to the back of your throat). Mouthfeel is so so sticky but slick as well. Nice brew that is more balanced than I anticipated after initially hearing the hop bomb reports. Thanks again Stone Brewing. 2009 22oz. Slipstream (760), USA
| 4.2 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Jul 27, 2009 Updated: Nov 6, 2009Very nice woody, sweet aroma, with a little lemon too. Dark pour and a foamy topper. Tastes bold and bright, full of resiny hops. Dry and piney, with a touch of smoke and a strong finish. I can also detect the flavors of caramel apples, herbs, even a little soy Stone 13th is powerful, rich, and peppy. Could this be their best? If so, it has a lot of company. This is excellent, and worthy of being Stone’s anniversary brew. Hank1980 (764), Athens, Georgia, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jul 26, 2009 Bottle. Poured amber brown, with a small off-white head. Aroma of grapefruit, big malt, resinous hops. Taste is similar, with lots of hop, some grapefruit and some pine, some caramel malt as well. Though they play a backseat to the hops. Finish is bitter, and the mouth is sticky and resinous. Overall, a very solid imperial red. Maybe this will be a brew they continue with after the 13th, like they did with the 11th.
