Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Clear, light brown body. Small tan head that vanishes. Variety of aromas and tastes, especially chocolate, cherries and licorice. Notes of leather and earth, raisins and roasted malt. The flavor is more hoppy bitter than sweet. Some oxidation. Medium body and somewhat watery texture. Dry finish. Good, but a little muddled.

Fine caramel topnotes--with a delicate, rich toasty finish. Hint of tawny port. Very pleasing. (22 oz bottle from the cellar)

Sampled at the O-Town Throwdown. Pours a reddish-brown with an off-white head leaving nice lacing. Sweet Aroma is complex with some spices, raisins, caramel and vanilla. Flavor starts sweet with a creamy mouthfeel of caramel, fruits, and vanilla. Leaves a warming finish!

22 oz. bottle from my notes. I drank this about two years ago but had misplaced my notes. Finally found them last night, so here goes: Pours a reddish amber with a moderate off white head. Pleasant aroma of caramel, roasted malt and raisins. The flavor was more of the same with some brown sugar also present. Moderate hops bitterness at the finish along with some alcohol burn.

Not sure what to expect from this one. Dark amber. Smell is funky with raisins and vanilla. Taste some chocolate hiding in here. The bourbon taste is unmasked. Some smokiness. Still not sure what to make of this one. Decent, but don’t know if I could drink much more of it. Just happy for the sample.

Pours a maroon red with a very small white bubbly head. Pretty heavy caramel and sweet malts in the smell. I get a unique aroma of wheat bread as well. The taste is somewhat similar. Touches of oxidation are detectable, very little carbonation. Get a lot of that big caramel, vanilla taste up front. Not extremely complex though. Tastes almost like a mild scotch ale. Not bad.

22 oz. bottle. Deep reddish brown with a slight haze. Rather small soap bubble head that collapses quickly. Aroma of burnt caramel, raisin, and some spicy hops. Medium body and light carbonation combine with a gently resinous quality for a pleasant mouthfeel. There is a solid caramel base sweetness that is nicely balanced by the peppery hop bitterness. Alcohol is subtle throughout, making this eminently drinkable. Average for Stone, which still makes it a very good beer.

Bottle from trade with kmweaver. Thanks Ken! Pours a mahogany color with a small off white head. Aroma of fermented fruit, toffee and brown sugar. Has a strong flavor of alcohol in the initial taste but it quicklly fades into the malt and hops presence. Has bit of a nutty, woody taste in the finish. A nicely done beer !
