Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Bottle courtesy of Immy. Hazelnut brown pour is the best descriptor. The head is beige, fluffy, and leaves moderate lace. Burnt roasted malt aroma, with a definitive hops presence. Also filling the nose are hints of wet wood, millk chocolate, and caramel. Tastes are made up of burnt malt, chocolate, sweet caramel, and subtle hops bitterness. Very enjoyable. FInish is acute bitterness/sweet malt and caramel. Very creamy and smooth, and a pleasure to drink. This one scores points for being subtle, very drinkable, and damn tasty. Thanks a lot Tim!

22 oz bomber - Pours dark reddish brown with a moderate, lasting head that leaves some nice lacing. The aroma is dominated by roasted malts. The flavor is heavily malted with mild hops presence. The finish is fairly clean with some nice hops kicking in and some pleasantly warming alcohol. This is an amped up brown ale. The flavor and the alcohol are much stronger. It was very good, though I would have liked a bit stronger hops presence, especially from a Stone ale.

(03.12.06) Stone 7th, 8th, and 9th anniversary vertical sampling at DiCarlo’s, special gift of Scott L. Brown 22 oz bomber bottle. 2004 Vintage (release date 08.16.04). 55 IBU. 7.8% ABV. Identified on website as a bigger version of Lee’s Mild from ’99. Pours hazy brown to yield a small white head. Good carbonation. Toasted malt aroma. Medium bodied ale that starts with moderate malt sweetness and smokey/caramel/ toasted malt flavors. Finishes with light malt fade. Little hop presence. Of the 7th, 8th, and 9th anniversary vertical sampling, the 8th anniversary version takes second place after the 7th anniversary. An excellent malty beer. Thanks Scott!

Poured a dark and hazy reddish brown with minimal off white head that doesnt stick around for long. Has a pleasent aroma of caramel, roasted malt and hops. Flavor is roasted malts, some dark fruit sweetness, and some chocolate and caramel. Finishes long with light bitterness (not like most Stone’s) and the roasted malt that lingers and lingers. Has a nice medium body with a fairly crisp feel to it. Not what I was expecting from Stone, but a tasty brew none the less.

This beer has a hearty roasted malt and caramel aroma that explodes from the bottle as soon as the cap is popped. This beer is mahogany in color and has a thick light copper colored head. This moderately thick beer offers a hoppy taste that fades to a nice healthy roasted malt taste. The roasted malt taste lingers well after the fluid has left the mouth.

Don’t even try reading the bottle... just pour this one. Cloudy dark brownish red body with almost no head. I poured this into the Avenitus glass, and usually that thing helps create volcanic heads. Not the case here, almost nothing. I couldn’t get much from the nose but it had notes of caramel, chocolate, nuts, and some fruit. The flavor is more assertive and I also got some oakey notes from it. It’s a little weird but I can’t see myself coming back.

Realized I had a few of these still, so why not rate it. Pouts out a dark orange color with a thick head. Aroma is of hops and some sweet malts. This beer was very drinkable with some notes of roasty malts. Not a bad beer, but could you really expect a bad one from Stone?
