Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Bottle (650ml). Shared with tupalev and blankboy, provided by tupalev. Poured a deep hazy tawny red with a smallish diminishing head. Aroma was rich with hop medley, yeasty caramel roast malt, alcohol, a touch of pine resin - simple, well-blended, almost like a hoppier, thinner harvest ale. Taste of sweet citrusy slightly resiny hops, somewhat bitter burnt candy roast malt, alcohol, also somewhat mossy and lactic. Mouthfeel is creamy, alcoholic, not terribly lively but not flat either - overall this struck me more like a barley wine, terrific balance of hops and malt for such a big beer.

Dark brown color with no head. Taste was more barley wine-like with a hint of oak in the taste. Too bad it’s retired.

This reminded me very much of a British Old Ale or lighter Barleywine. The flavor was full and a bit sweet with a fruity-estery quality that ws a bit surprising, without an overwhelming hop presence, which is in itself surprising for Stone. Nice, but not stellar.

22 oz bomber. Poured a deep red with a clinging tan head. The aroma was of roasted malts with a hint of charred oak. Excellent blend of raisins and peaty smoke, but with a barleywine quality as well. Tough one to piece together. A very good beer, that aged well over the extra year.

Bottle. Poured an excellent shade of deep ruby with a ring of beige head. Aroma really drew me in... deep dark fruits (prunes and cherries), smoke, oak, chocolate, and some faint roastiness were all in there. Flavor picked up toasted oak chips throughout, with baker’s chocolate, caramel, smoke, and English hoppy bitterness. Barleywine-style sweetness provided a solid base. Became heavier and more taxing on the palate as it warmed. Bitter and fruity on the finish. I really enjoyed this one.

Hazy brown color with a quickly dissipating light brown head, A strong molassas aroma with hints of chocolate. Flavor of heavy dark malts with hints of caramel but very little carbonation, but overall, a relatively tasty beer.

A very nice addition to the Anniversary collection by Stone. In this case, a combination between a Stout and a Brown Ale. Very nice chololate flavors combined with a smooth texture makes for a very enjoyable beer to drink.
Feb. 2006, 200th re-rating -- Awesome brownish red body, much better than previous. This beer has ages extrodinarily, superb chocolate and malt aromas dominate with dark fruits showing that weren’t evident before. Heavy coffee is coming through after a year and a half in both the taste and the ending. One of the best Stone Brews I’ve had the chance to taste.

Pour is deep mahoghany brownish read with a tight dense tan head...smell is smokey and hoppy with some sweetness too...maybe molasses...some light cherries but dark cherries and maybe prunes too...taste is sweet and caramel-ish up front, but turning typical Stone bitter toward the finish...lots of English barleywine round sweetness throughout...some vanilla notes but also a definate peat smoke quality...oak adds to the bitterness of the finish...
