Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

22oz Bottle. [snifter] Murky brown color with little head. Strong initial nose of rust that didn’t mellow out for a few minutes. After this, aromas of earthy/piney hops, rich caramel malt, dark fruit sweetness, and general earthiness/peat. Smooth palate with flavors of all of the above, focusing on a somewhat smoky peat malt with a nice hop bitterness to balance it all out. Very scotch-like, definite presence of tannin quality from the oak chips. Seems to be aging very nicely. Good stuff!

Bomber shared by Blake. Hazy brown-amber body under a small tan head. Medium-roasted caramel malt aroma with a bit of orange cream on the end. The flavor features rasinsy, peaty caramel malt with pine hop seasoning. Peat, roffee in the finish. A very nice scottish-like ale.

Thanks SecretSanta. Pours to a hazy dark garnet body with a thin white head. Spotty lacing. The aroma is caramel, peat, toffee, vanilla. The flavor is bourbon flavored roasted peanuts. Peat. Smooth and tasty. I’d call this a Scotch Ale. The palate is dry and earthen. This is a pretty good beer, but I think the style is wrong.

Sampled at the Corkscrew Sunday beer tasting. This is my fourth time with this one, and I must say it has tasted progressively better on each round. I think this is ageing wonderfully. Barleywine richness on the palate (molasses, caramel, toffee) and a nice rounded out hop finish to keep one anticipating the next sip. I noticed the oak/bourbon like flavors yesterday, and now I see that oak chips were added, so I’m glad I wasn’t entirely off-based with the note. Nice work by the good folks at Stone. --Rerate from a bottle at the Champaign-Urbana Beer Club courtesy of Andy. I’m liking this stuff more and more with age, and I’m upping the overall from 17 to 18.

Thanks to whomever it was that sent me this bomber many, many months ago…
1 year old bomber:

Pours a hazy dark chestnut brown body and a lofty and burly tan head. The aroma has large mentions of toffee, caramel, and coco. The flavor can back that up with kilned barley, a large nuttiness and small hints of smoke. A bolder submission of toffee, caramelized brown sugar, dates, figs, mocha… shards of lingering woodsy hops in the finish. I bet the hops were far more upfront a year ago. The palate is creamy and rounded. I dig the burnt toffee finish…. But there is a hint of hairspray there????

[22 oz. aged 1 year] Pours a cloudy, brownish-copper color, with a decent head. Aroma is alcohol, caramel and hops. Tastes like toasted malts, caramel, hops and some good fruits as well. A very complex brew that gets more and more interesting as it warms up and the palate adjusts.

22 oz bottle - Pours dark copper with a creamy tan head that stays well and laces pretty well too. Aromas of caramel, vanilla, peat, smoke. Flavor is caramel very much caramel like the little square ones that came in the plastic wrapper as a kid. Some toffee notes, a bit of vanilla, and some earthy peat and a little roasted malt and raisins can also be found... Palate is so smooth and mouth coating. This is deliciously complex and so drinkable.. Outstanding.. Does Stone ever make a bad beer?
