Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Poureda light mohagony with a off white head , Light aroma’s of roasted malt and fruit with some chocolate scents. Flavor balanced malt not over hopped with hints of molasses, toffee and raisin. Finish has some alcohol sweetness but not overpowering. Bottle was aged just over one year.

Pours very dark brownish-red with a small dark head. The aroma has the caramel and toffee of an Oktoberfest, the smokiness of a Scotch Ale, and the subtle hop qualities of an American Brown. Very bready, with some alcohol. Very sweet flavor—the caramel and toffee take over in the flavor. There is some roasted malt flavor and hop bitterness, but the other raters are right--it mostly tastes like a caramel candy. Slightly smoky finish. Smooth and delicious.

Bottle. Dark brown pour. Big malty biscuity aroma, some molasses and some raisin. Again big caramel malty flavors, more molasses and a touch of smoke, and raisins and bread. Excellent beer.

Pours out a darl brown with a little tan head. Smells a lot like sweet baked goods. The taste is great. Sweet flavor, tastes a lot like caramel candy. Truly a delicous beer. Once again stone makes a quality product.

Deep copper color with a moderate tan head. Biscuit and cookie dough on the aroma. Flavor profile features toffee up front with cookie dough sitting back a bit. Nice toasty flavors round this beer out well. Hop bitterness, but not hop flavor, is evident. Nice clean finish. A darn good beer.

After all the good things I’ve heard about this one, I was very disappointed. I couldn’t finish it. Maybe I got a bad bottle. Then again, I don’t like Arrogant Bastard either. Perhaps I’m not "sophisticated enough".

Bottle. Thanks MilkmanDan for breaking this out during your tasting on 9/10. Sweet caramel aroma that is barleywinish. Considerable alcohol presence and molasses in the nose as well. Beautiful dark amber in color with an off-white head. High alcohol comes through to the flavor. Sweet toffee notes. Tastes not unlike a Brachs caramel. Really nice.

Decent head. Good carbonation. Reduces quickly to a thin sloppy bit of foam. Big roasty aroma with caramel, toasted almonds and a bit of coffee. Hint of molasses as it warms. Color is a dark mahagony brown. Flavor is roasty and slick in the mouth. More coffee and roasted grains. A bit grainy on the palate. Then as you get further in to the brew it become buttery and malty. Long bitter roasted finish. Hides its alcohol well. A decent brew but nothing all that special. Does get softer and more flavorful as it warms. Needs a bit more hops to make this brew a real good one.
