Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

22 oz bomber. Pours a dark amber brownish color with a thick creamy head. Smells of smoked wood chips, caramel, and hazelnut. Taste is very complex. A combination of hazelnut, malts, hops, some fruit, carbonation and it has that smoky flavor to it. This was the third time i’ve had this beer and aging does it very well. Another great brew from Stone.

Deep brown/red, the color of dried blood. One-finger head is dense and tan, nearly yellow, with exceptional staying power. Unpleasant winey and caramelly nose, with stewed fruits and currants, pumpkin pie spice, and charred wood. The slightest bit of bubblegum as well. Tastes very "brown", very muddy, sour, alcoholic, spicy. Hops are in perfect balance, though. Palate is full and velvety soft. Roasty, woody, bilous, and extremely tannic aftertaste. Like eating mulch and tea leaves. It gets worse with time. I can’t believe Stone didn’t dump this failure. What a f***ing waste of money.

Much love/hate to the self-proclaimed High Priest of Kevins, Kevin. Pours a thick amber with a nice frothy head. Aroma is hops, toast, and raisin. Flavor is reminiscent of a barleywine, and a yeast prescence is obvious. Palate is full and coats the tongue. Overall, a strong effort that I would revisit after aging.

Probably my least favorite stone beer I’ve had, only because the others are so good and really suit my taste. Still a good beer, reminds me of a belgian.

Sweet caramel aroma. Body was a dark red with small tan head that disipated fast. Flavor of sweet caramel roasted and some alcohol presence. Left a roasted caramel faftertaste. Little sweet and rich, good beer.

Hazy, dark amber appearance with a small head and moderate lacing. A hint of wood led to an aroma of roasted, chocolate malt and dark fruit (think figs), turning slightly vegatable-like as it warmed. Some sweetness, but the lively carbonation prevented it from becoming too cloying. Rich, smooth malty flavors with some earthiness and spiciness as it finishes.
