Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Got this bottle from Whole Foods in Vienna, VA. Pours a clear, deep mahagony color. Light, tan head. Strong hop presence. Very warm. Rather smooth for an American Strong Ale, but still a little bite from the hops. Not much of a finish. It has all the makings of a really good beer, but Stone just didn’t put it all together in this one.

Nice, pleasant aroma. Deep red, slightly cloudy appearance. A bit fizzy, goldeny flavor.

Damn, that’s a yummy stuff-a! Beautiful deep ruby color with a trace of head around the edge of the glass. Some burgandy nose-ness as well. Warm feeling as it heads on down with some hoppy-malty combo going on. Great stuff!

From a "1 Pt. 6 FL Oz" bottle - Pours a dark, caramel-colored liquid with a beige head and mild, sweet aroma. There is some wateriness about the foretaste, but the hops and roasted malts really kick in as the brew travels over one’s tongue.

Brownish orange pour with a thin beige head that vanished to a scant halo. This is a little complex in all aspects. Alcohol, raisins, peaty, and a little caramel. Flavor is good and appetizing. Smoky, roasted flavor, sweet, burnt raisins, somewhat like a scottish ale with a hop kick. Definite bourbon barrel and mild vanilla notes. Good flavor palate. A little watery but barelly noticeable. Can’t wait till next year.

Original Rating (30-Nov-04, 8-3-8-3-16=3.8): Charcoal, caramel, burnt raisins, light smokiness and some alcohol in the aroma. Clear burnished copper colour with shy tan head that recedes to ring. Toasted malts and roasted malts with a pleasant sweet maltiness and resiny citrus-orange hops floating over everything. Short flavour profile with lasting hop flavour. Bitterness and roasted malts knock the edge off the incredible sweetness. Medium-full body though perhaps a bit still and slightly cloying with a dry, almost astringent finish. Bottle sampled with beerbuzzmontreal, Lubiere, MartinT, Rastacouere and SimonB.
Rerate (15-May-04, 6-4-7-3-13=3.3): Chocolate covered cabbage, hazelnuts and cocoa in the aroma. Opaque reddish brown with tan, fine-bubbled head that recedes to a lasting cover with some sudsy lacing. Fair bitterness. Cocoa powder and leafy green hops. Medium-light body with somewhat low carbonation. Bottle enjoyed with beerbuzzmontreal, MartinT, Olivier_MTL, Rastacouere and Yowie.

Mahogany body under a creamy beige head. Chickory coffee, ground nuts, sweet rolls baking. Medium body with light carbonation. Lots of flavor. Not as good as anticipated but still quite rewarding.

Ample hazelnutty roastiness pleasantly mirrors some burnt toffee at times...Fruity caramel when squeezed produces lactic drops...Ground coffee beans and cocoa powder deliciously balances out the everlasting resinous hoppiness...
