Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Clear brown color. Aroma of malt, burnt caramel, raisin and alcohol. Flavor of burnt caramel, raisin, malt and alcohol, bitter finish. Medium body, liquorous and syrupy texture. It’s complex and well-balanced, I’m very surprised by the quality of this beer.

(Bottle). Virtually no head. Dark red brown body of thick apparent density, not clear. Roasted, caramel, roasted coffee grains, grape, vanilla as weel as alcohol in aroma. To my nose, barleywine-like signature. Moderated sweetness as well as toasted flavors at first. Modorated to clearly heavy bitterness toward the final of average long duration. Medium full body, a bit syrupy. Very well balanced. A light astringent finish feel but in a very positive fashion. Very interesting beer. Sampled at MartinT’s place with other RateBeerians for the "Montreal’s Voyager Par Les Papilles’ first tasting session".

Dark brown body with a fading head. Nose is that of a bakery harvest deploying abundant rasin bread, almonds and roasted malt aromas. Rich maltiness provides caramel, coffee and pumpernickel bread on a roasty background. Big bitterness in the finish. Slightly powdery texture, lightly astringent though never disturbing. Interesting to say the least.
Doesn’t seem to take the age too well. Dropping this from 3.5 to 3.2

Clear red/brown with a tan head. Bitter nose with some alcohol, roasty, caramel malts, hints of nuts. Dry, bitter flavor, roasty, not particularly sweet, with touches of smoke and plums.

Appearance: A nice brown / slight ruby appearance, Stone seems to favor this, looks good in my book. Aroma: A nice toasty malt flavor, pretty mild for stone though. Mouthfeel: A delicious dash of some very tasty roasty malt with a pinch of hop aged with oak chips for about 6 months, very nice. A very light, refreshing and smooth mouthfeel mixed with a moderate alcohol level makes this one an excellent mild. Overall: Compared to the arrogant bastard / double bastard this is hardly a strong ale by stones standards. Very subtle, very mild, some of the tastiest malts I’ve ever had.

I enjoyed this beer. It pours a dark ruby color with a rather small tan head. Aroma is nice and reminds me of nutts and caramel. Taste is nice with mod sweet roasty and a nicely balaced bitter finish. Good palate. Another stone winner.

Nutty and dried fruit flavors....with a significant hops presnece (always welcome with me). Roasted malt and woodsy flavors...lots to it. Has anyone tried to read the back of the bottle? Pretty involved analysis that few can comprehend without the aid of dictionary.com.

Bottled bomber. Bottle brown, clear with a medium tan head. Mixed hoppy malty smell. Lots of burnt malt taste with only a medium to light body. OK but not very mild like. Not one of their best attempts but I need to try again.
