Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

22 oz. brown bomber bottle. Freshness date of 2004 on front label. Poured out a medium brown color, with a minimal tan colored head. It quickly faded back to a thin ring of foam around the edge of the glass. Aromas are of fresh malts, slight yeasty aromas, some cocoa powder, and coffee beans. Slight vanilla, but nothing too noticeable, unless you’re looking for it. Hops are somewhat subdued, but provide a dusty, dry finish to the beer. Alcohol is noticeable when swallowed, fairly warming. A decent strong ale by any means, but nothing to write home about.

Bottle. Deep ruby amber color, thick head. Earthy aroma, some smoky oak notes in there too. Sweet malt flavor, some oak, molasses, and vanilla overtones. Hops aren’t too prominent, the sweet flavor never really subsides through the finish. More oak, smoke, and earthy flavors come through afterwards. Kind of reminiscent of some barley wines that I’ve had. Quite drinkable and I really enjoyed it.

Intriguing. Deep red-brown. Nose chocolatey, some peat, bit woody, some smoke and vanilla, and a dubble-esque candy sugar sweetness. Flavor is malty and sweeet, some molasses and plums. More vanilla, more sugars, vaguely roasty with some caramel and a bit nutty.

Bottle Chocolaty, vanilla and sugary aroma. Hazy red brown, low creamy head. Chocolate, vanilla, vineous, a bit one-dimensional. Solid body, slick mouthfeel. Peters off relatively fast - arrogant bastard stayed longer with me just before.

Pours a dark red that with a large head that fades to a medium head that stays. Aroma is of cinnamon, and coffee. chocolate. Flavor is of coffee, chocolate, and biscuit. Nice full palate that is made creamy by the large head. Rich and drinkable.

A mildly unexciting ale. On the side of good but not especially dynamic or complex. Some hops, a lot of smoke, and a slightly above average ale.

last night ended up rather hazy... so my entire notes ended up as "goodish". Rather mellow for a strong ale, but definatly another solid beer from strong.

Mmmm...tasty. Pours brown with a small off-white head. Smells of leather, and vanilla with some roasted grain along with earthy hops. Flavor is slightly nutty with a lot of earthy hop flavor. Bitterness is well balanced by the sweetness from the beer. Alcohol level is well hidden. This is dangerously easy to drink.
