Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

Orangish brown color with a small off-white head. Malt, caramel, and hops aroma and flavors. Not quite as great as I expected.

Clear brown color with a small off-white head. The aroma had some nice tones...roasted coffee, chocolate, hops citrus. The flavor was more of the same...the hops really dominate as the beer warms. The feel was very crisp...slightly thin...dry finish. I hate to say this, but this is not an exciting beer at all. Stone usually knocks my socks off, but this time it left me a little dissappointed.

Appearance is brown with a somewhat lingering white head. Full-bodied, slightly nutty beer. Not as aggressive as some stone ales, I found this pretty easy to sip on.

(draft at Freakin Frog, Las Vegas) Clear brown body with red highlights, off-white head. Aroma is sweet, nutty, some caramel, light roasty. Taste is moderately sweet, nutty, some caramel, light roasty (very malty, minimal bitterness), bit of astringency in finish. Undercarbonated medium body. Big flavor for style.

Pours a dark clear crimson with a beige head. Aroma is a mix of hops and coffee. Taste is pretty sweet with notes of roasted malt, coffee, nuts, citrusy hops, caramel and a hint of wood. Moderately bitter, lightly burnt aftertaste. Mouthfeel is full but I would have preferred more body and carbonation. Good head retention. Overall, pretty interesting -seems to defy categorizaiton.

Fairly dark maple syrup/ruby colored body. Medium frothy tan head. The aroma is malty, nutty, medium sweet, toast, and some wood. A medium amount of resinous hops follows the maltiness. The flavor is lots of roasted malts, nutty, resinous hops, and some alcohol. Th ebody is medium but kind of watery. The bitterness really assaults you at the end! Interesting beer from an always interesting brewer.

Aroma is ALL coffee. The flavor is only 2 things:
Coffee
Hops
While this formula works for stouts, the english-style malts just don’t carry the weight. The palate is uneven and the painful finish is long. This is an experiment, and not an especially good one.

Bottled, thanks hopsrus! Dark ruby with richcreamy head. Coffee aroma. Sweet with soft mouthfeel. Raw and sugary, big on coffee. Oaky finish with medium bitterness. Has potential to age, but is too syrupy for me at this point.
