Commercial Description:
The Stone 8th Anniversary Ale is, like all previous Stone Anniversary Ales so far, an adaptation of a previous Stone Brewing Co release. This year we set out to make a “Anniversary-ized” version of Lee’s Mild, a 3.8% abv limited release beer from 1999. For this beer we used some of the same malts that we had used in the Lee’s Mild, added more hops, less water (to bring the alcohol content up), and found a tasty balance of toasty/roastyness from the malt and a subtle (by Stone standards!) hop presence. To add further complexity, oak chips were employed to round out the character and give the beer a bit of vanilla/bourbon influence from the wood.

A hazy red-orange beer with a disappearing orange head. The aroma is sweet with notes of alcohol and lots of fruit - especially peach, but also some woody notes - reminds me of a sherry. The flavor is of anise, wood fruit - especially over ripe, cinnamon, and alcohol, that burns the mouth. The end is dry from a combination of wood and hops.

From tap at Stone Bistro. Pours hazy brown with a lacing light tan head. Chocolate dense aroma. Light breadish, caramel/chocolate in the initial flavour. Followed by a mild hops presence. Smooth and hoppy finish with a lingering chocolate malt flavour.

Bottled, thanks hopsrus! Dark ruby with richcreamy head. Coffee aroma. Sweet with soft mouthfeel. Raw and sugary, big on coffee. Oaky finish with medium bitterness. Has potential to age, but is too syrupy for me at this point.

Bottled (thanks jjpm74!). Reddish amber colour, small beige head. Aroma is bready toffeeish along with some winelike notes. Oak and vanilla as well. Some slight alcohol. Flavour is raisins, bread, quite grassy along with some alcohol and spices. Has aged well!

dark brown with ruby edges, scant head that quickly disapates, rich roasted malt aroma with fruity undertones, rich malt flavor with a long bitter finish, upon warming lots of rich and chewey chocolate character comes through and the bitter finish begins to deminish

Dark reddish-brown colour. Dull, no head. aroma of chocolate, nuts, woody/earthy hops. The palate is smooth - a little oily even - with nuts, chocolate and hints of smoke, too. The finish is peanutty and sweet. It has some okay elements, but the package simply is not compelling. Heavy on the Stone yeast, too, also not so compelling (for me, anyway).

(draft at Freakin Frog, Las Vegas) Clear brown body with red highlights, off-white head. Aroma is sweet, nutty, some caramel, light roasty. Taste is moderately sweet, nutty, some caramel, light roasty (very malty, minimal bitterness), bit of astringency in finish. Undercarbonated medium body. Big flavor for style.
