Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

Over 18 months aged, beer dist has a slew of them....22 oz big bottle. A bright orange-amber color, thick sticky frothy inch of white foam. Clingy head. Grapefruit/citrus+ pine hop aroma. Bitter, not too sharp. Mucho hops + malt : good body, NOT the greatest that Stone has made...good mouthfeel. Glad I tried it; won’t have one too soon

22oz bomber, aged 18 months now, traded by crosling. pours bright orange with soapy white head. not the appearance i want for this style. nose is still pretty hoppy but mellowed into a pleasant grapefruit and fruit punch hop aroma, some cereal and oxidized notes in there too. flavor is sorta dull, still pretty bitter, fruity-orange, grapefruit, and grapes. alcohol is well hidden and body is medium. sorta tasty but still a pretty uninspired american strong from a brewery that quickly pops in my head when i think of the style.

Cloudy, orangish color with a substantial off-white head. Aroma of grass & orange, with a nice, subdued hop aroma. Taste was of a slightly over-aged IPA - heavier malt, but the old hops are still hanging around and contributing. A bit earthy with some light citrus. Smooth, but enough body to make it interesting. I like this brew - glad to have tried it.

22oz. bomber: I found this in the back of the fridge, and was surprised that I hadn’t rated it yet. It pours an almost clear, darker golden color. Maybe a twinge of orange in it. The aroma is very good. A big shot of hops, like you would expect from Stone. Mainly grapefruit and pine, but also some grassy notes. The taste was solid. A fine malt body behind the beer, although perhaps a bit more delicate (for lack of a better description) than most of their other brews. Decent balance to the hops. I could drink a few more of these.

First was the intense malt in your face. It was extremely sweet smelling, fruity, earthy. Some what like apple juice. Small amount of bitterness initially. Aroma was a pale translucent golden with a ton of yeast in the bottom. The beer was intensely sweet and earthy. As it warmed it got alot more hoppy, which was a nice surprise. Obviously this beer was a little older, as the bottle was labeled September of 2005, so I assume it was sweet due to the aging, but this was a real good beer.

Bottle shared at the O Town Throwdown. Pours a goldish amber color, small white head. Aroma of yeast, citrus, soap. Medium bodied. Finish is citrus, with some sourness present. Like my fellow UM fan gumby, I was not a huge fan of this brew.

Pours a clear gold with a very modest white head. Wasnt digging the smell on this brew too much. It was kind of a wierd soapy smell. It had some light citrus and orange too, but something seemed off. Taste is fairly mellow, get some wheat and citrus characters towards the end, but overall I wasnt too impressed with this one. I thought it was pretty boring.

22 oz bomber. Reading the commerical description, it seems like a great idea. However, there is something not quite right with this one. Up front, there are all the right hop aromas but something doesn’t meld perfectly with the flavors. It is still a good beer and I appreciate the creativity, but I wish it went together a bit better.
