Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

Draft at O’Brien’s. Hazy gold pour. Aroma shows some age with some mild smoke and a lot of sweet malt. The flavor is of some banana, oxidation, smokiness, and spices.

Hazy orange pour with a good offwhite head. Smells of orange and spice. Tastes bitter with a nice hoppy flavor. Good summer wheat style beer.

On tap at the brewery. Slightly hazy, goldenrod colored pour with a milky layer of white head. Pleasantly hoppy aroma with a lightly caramelized malt backing. Some tropical fruit notes of papaya and mango blend nicely with a bit of soft red grapefruit. Medium bodied, creamy carbonated, soft mouthfeel. The hops have faded some, but create a not-so-bitter tropical fruit flavor thats quite enjoyable. Nice, supple malt background with a cream of wheat smoothness. A bit of light caramel sweetness and grapefruits linger in the final smack.

22oz - Aroma floral hops, with a citrus and malty backing. Pours a slightly clear yellowish-brown with a small head and great lacing. Flavor is hoppy for sure. A sour dish soap lemon taste persists after the intial blast of hops fade. Palate is crisp and tart. Stone makes so many better beers of the same vain, it is a wonder they make specials like this.

I’m pretty sure that I couldn’t pick this out if I tasted it side by side with Three Floyds Gumballhead. It is a hop dominated wheat beer, a good summer beverage. Hops come through in the form of citrus/pine and the beer has enough body to back up the hops. Well made.

Room filling aroma of orange and floral hops. Beautiful bright and crystal clear orange with a huge, firm white head that vanishes, leaving lacing on the side of the glass. Sweet orange taste, not much malt, but a long and ver bitter finish should keep any kid from confusing this for some sweet orange drink. Description says it’s a wheat beer. I don’t get any haze or other tell tales of a wheat beer. Originally I gave it a 14 overall, but it started to grow on me. Not quite like Ruination ... but a striaghtforward hop meister from Stone.

Bottle thanks to jjpm74. Bright orange pour. Definitely showing its age. Earthy, some malt, must, and oxidation/menthol notes showing. Still some hop presence.
