Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

(22 oz. bottle ("September 2005") via trade with <A HREF=http://www.ratebeer.com/ViewUser.asp?UserID=3 target=blank>IrishBoy, thanks Richard!, cellared for 7 mos. after trade) Soft and hoppy...Pours cloudy light amber with 2 1/2 fingers of sturdy, level off-white head that recedes to about 1/4". Aroma is grapefruit rind and pine, light caramel underneath. Mouthfeel medium-full, quite soft, perhaps a touch of stickiness. Sturdy curtain of lacing inside glass. Flavor is quite piney and grapefruity upfront with some caramel maltiness emerging underneath. Piney through finish, along with some alcohol burn. Has kind of a big IPA feel. Enjoyed it.

Sept. 2005 rating - Poured a pale orange color with HUGE head and lacing that clung to the glass. The aroma was sweet and citrusy and the taste was similar. Nice sweet malty taste with loads of hops...well balanced. My first Stone tasting...hope I can get my hands on more of this stuff.

Poured a still clear amber with a large creamy white head that refused to dissipate. Aroma of sharp piney hops, candy, grass. Taste is sharp hops, with grass and a touch of grapefruit with a long bitter finish. Clean though somewhat one-dimensional. However, it is crisp, bold and refreshing, which I think was just what Stone was going for with this one. I liked it.

wheat? yes, it’s got the wheat beer look, but any wheat feel is totally supressed by hops. a stone beer, enough said.

Copper in color and a dense ivory head. The beer has undeniably oxidized over the years; but still picking up the intended pine resin notes from the hops and caramel malt back bone. A lot of orange zest bitterness and a big ABV. burn. Good beer no doubt, but I should have consumed this a few years back for optimal sensory satisfaction... –may bad!

poured this one last night. orange golden hazey hue. white tight head that flourished. full of pine evergreen needles , floral and resiny notes tingle the nose. full bodied explosion hit the tongue and palate, big upfront boldness of crisp hops, vanilla, and alcohol warmth. sweet false back bone that is subtly different then what you would expect. slight yeast push that envelopes the flavor throughout clinging to bite or tang at the end. much better then most of the rates suggest...imo.

Big rocky off white head leaving nice lace over an ever so slightly hazy amber pour. Big hop aroma of pine, citrus, and spice, but hiding underneath is some honey, peach, and apricot. Medium, smooth mouthfeel, light carbonation, and a mildly resinous character. Sweet light toffee, followed quickly by bitter grapefruit, and some peppery spice. Long, bitter finish.
