Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

"Poured a hazy, yellow orange color with a massive head which left nice lacing on the glass. Aroma was of sweet and citrus. Tasted very much like a doubleipa. Overall very nice, just wouldn’t call it a strong ale."

Sampled at Falling Rock during GABF. Poured from a Firkin at high red wine temp. Hazy yellow orange with small suspended particles with a minimal but lingering head. The aroma was floral and citrusy. Generally light. The flavor had key limes, grapefruit, wheat, caramel, a light sweetness and a pine bitter finish. Body was syrupy and overall heavy. This was good, but I’m wondering if wasn’t served too warm.

Bottle sample. Re-rated at a cooler temp. Better take on the aroma this time around with sweet wheat, caramel and citrus (orange). Nothing new to note with appearance. Enjoyed the falvor at a cooler temp. though I made the same flavor notes. I did increase my flavor and score one point.

Bought this bottle at BevMo in San Diego, CA. Foggy orange pour with a decent white lacing head. Caramel, citrusy hops, and a somewhat zingy aroma. Nice, hoppy flavor. One of the better Stone Beers I’ve had.

Inviting grapefruit/citrus hop nose nearly overpowers the toasty wheat, which is only slightly evident in the aroma. While the combo works OK in the nose, it becomes muddled in the body. Loads of hop bitterness clash with the smoothness of the wheat, creating dirty off flavors that don’t seem to fit this ’clean’ beer. Wet dirt is one I keep getting in the finish. The heavy mouthfeel doesn’t help either. The loads of citrusy hops are overpowering throughout and just don’t synch with the wheat (and yeast) for me. I would take their near perfect IPA any day of the week and twice on Sunday over this.

Great beer for hop heads. Color is clear bronze with minimal white head. Aroma is hops, wheat, grass, and hops. Taste is very similar. It is similar to an Imperial IPA, but the wheat and malt temper the hops so there is all the flavor, without the bitter bite. Long hop finish with alcohol burn. I really liked this beer.

burnt orange appearance with minimal white head...aroma and flavor are dominated by grapefruit hops, and is very similar to Founder Harvest Ale.....everything is similar to the rind of a gfruit....palate is okay, but a tad harsh...thank you to silphium

Slightly herbal nose with some mustiness and sour apple. Beautiful golden in appearance with a huge head and oozing lace. Crisp and sharp flavor, lemon with bread, not real yeasty, with some perfumy hops. Thickens as it warms. Interesting…

Bottle from Santa. cloudy light gold with not head. This beer smelled great but have very ordinary taste. The flavors almosted seemed subdued. The grapefuit hop flavor was present but it seemed muted by the strange malty taste. I drank most the majority of the bottle, the rest went to my dog.
