Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

Clear copper with gold and orange sitting below a thick snow white head. Very distinct grapefruit hop aroma, quite strong and powerful hop profile. Fairly one dimensial. Tacky grapefruit and citrus hop character. There is a mild malt sweetness that comes up later and works well with the hip. Has a faint yeast character and a growing alcohol presence asn it warms. Nice beer but I’ve come to expect more from Stone.

Pours hazy orangish straw with a huge white head of soapy large bubbles the slowly fades. Aroms is sticky caramel malt blended hops of mild pine, citrus, and peach. Flavor is soft but sticky caramel, apricotm mild pine and citrus. Finish was dry then I thought it would be from the sweet maltiness in the foreflavor making it more drinkable then the front of my tongue predicted. Body is medium, palate is kept light and flowing by a fine carbonation.

22 oz. bomber at Pete’s pad on 12/5/07. Blown away by how well this thing held up! wow. Simply a nice beer. Palate is soft, clean, elegant, and a little buttery. Subtle bittering hops in the flavor and finish make this a pleasure to sip on. The wheat aspect adds a little intrigue. Curious what this was like fresh...guess I’ll never know.

22 oz bottle date 9/05. Pours a yellow-orange with a big fluffy white head that lasts forever and laces the glass. The second pour from the bomber some yeast floaties.

The aroma is caramel malts with floral, grapefruity, piney hops. It’s awesome at first (9), but as it warms it becomes more floral, peppery and medicinal.

The flavor is sweet malts followed by a large but rather subdued floral/grassy hop bitterness with notes of melon. As it warms, peppery medicinal alcohol comes out. The mouthfeel is smooth and velvety with a sticky bitterness.

Overall, it tastes like a decent mellow IPA. It reminds me some of Rogue’s Brutal Bitter. As I go through the bomber, I like it less and less.

The 22 ounce bottle poured a slightly hazy pale amber beverage with a off-white creamy head that was fully lasting and left great lacing on the glass. The aroma was very hoppy with hints of pine resin and a notable grapefruit nose. The body was medium-full with soft but plentiful carbonation and a lightly creamy texture. The flavor starts off sharply bitter but very quickly mellows and sweetens. This lasts through the long finish which is also quite warming.

Pours a glowinly orange to light brown color. Hops and more hops in the aroma, consistanly pleasant. Has a dry crisp mouthfeel of a wheat. Contrasting flavors, leans to a IPA then wants to bolt to a barlywine slash hefe. Alcohol makes its presense known then dissipates. Carbination ends this beer with a boring aftertaste. A pleasant beer but either Stone was trying to hard or not hard enough.

Bottle. Golden amber color with large white foamy head. Floral hops with a bit of citrus yeastiness. Smooth yet very hoppy. Taste has some spice (corriander, pepper), with citrus hops in the finsh. Not a bad american strong or even IPA, but I’m hard pressed to find where the wheat beer characteristics are.

shared with my brother. Semi hazy golden pour with lots of floating bits. Generous white head that melts away to a thin film. Hoppy, pineapple armoa. Semi-sweet, PNW hops. Raw, harsh beginning. This seems more like an IIPA. Needs to slumber in the cellar for a couple more years to meld the flavors and mellow a bit. Finish is sticky sweet with a nice balance between the malt and hop. Beginning is too young.
