Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

The color is a mix of gold and orange, with a thick peach colored head. The aroma is apricot and hops. Medium to heavy body with a smooth, almost oily texture. The finish is a bit sweet.

Bottle. Poured orange color (like an orange nectar) with off white head. Head dissapates very quickly. Aroma is orange, hops, and malt. Taste is malty, a sweet malt with some wheaty taste as well. Tastes like a lighter Hercules Double IPA a wee bit. Nice finish, good beer.

I have to say that IPA style beers really aren’t my favorite, so I tried to be neutral in tasting this. Coming in a bomber of a bottle, I was a bit worried that I might not finish it all if I didn’t like it. The aroma was an immediately blast of floral and citrus. It LOOKED like a wheat, but it smelled like an IPA. After first taste, I was blasted with hops and more hops. I’m not a hophead at all, so it really wasn’t that pleasant but for those who are I’m sure it was well made. Medium-high ABV so it was rather warming on a cool day which was nice. As it warmed the hop flavor seemed to come out more. Mouthfeel was very full. I enjoyed the type of beer they were looking to make, just not sure if I will be buying the 9th again.

22oz bottle poured a murky pale orange color with a foamy white head. Strong citrus scent in the aroma with some sweet malt notes. The flavor is initially hoppy and bitter. Mild malt flavor with hints of spices and pepper. Nice dry and tart finish. A very good wheat beer.

Tasting at mcbackus 10/19. Very glad to have tried this. Amber pour, medium mosty white head. I smell some yeast, fruit, and some juicy hops. Flavor is very smooth with a good balance of malts and hops. Wheat makes this creamy and nice. Good beer.

10th June 2008. Cloudy amber gold beer. Plenty of hops but offset by a barleywine amount of malt. When it was straight from the fridge actually thought it was a barleywine. Very drinkable.

Decent brew but I really think Stone should try and do more then hop the hell out of beers. Light copper colored brew with a big hop nose. Leans more toward the fruity hop flavors. Abv is well masked.
