Commercial Description:
As has been a tradition, we have “Anniversary-ized” a recipe from our history by cranking it up, making it stronger and more assertive. With this year’s Anniversary we decided to look back at a wheat beer that we released a couple of Spring/Summers a few years ago: Stone Heat Seeking Wheat. While it was a plenty tasty beer, we ultimately decided that it wasn’t that reflective of what Stone was all about, and we unceremoniously dropped it from our lineup. For the Stone 9th Anniversary Ale, we carried some of the characteristics from the Stone Heat Seeking Wheat --- clear, not hazy; hoppy, not yeasty; combining a delicious hop bitterness and wheat tartness --- and made some…well…adjustments.

Clear sparkling gold, creamy white head. Not a favorite of mine in the aroma department. Seemed to have a plastic tone early, but thankfully it faded just enough to detect notes of sweet grapefruit, sugared tropical fruit and melon, light pine, with subdued hints of lemongrass. Flavor up front was a boatload of citrus, slightly earthy, with wheat coming out late to dry out the mouth. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, hoppy finish. Stone is one of favorites, but this brew from them unfortunately is not...

If you were to do a blind tasting of Ruination, Stone IPA, and this beer, I doubt you would be able to pick it out with any accuracy - however, that DOES mean that it’s a damn fine brew; it’s just not something all that "special" for a Stone product - very citrusy and hoppy, but with major caramel malt so that the huge hop profile doesn’t overwhelm you - if allowed to age, perhaps the other subtle background flavors would come to the forefront, but right now it is mostly a hop explosion with sticky malts trying to counteract - the result is a confusing, albeit flavorful experience.

bottle. hazy orange with a medium-sized white head. aroma is orangey citrus hops with a soft biscuit malt backbone. this is quite hoppy - leafy citrus flavour, yeast, and some evidence of warm alcohol. I like this despite the lack of depth.

Golden color, lots of lacing, puffy head. Nose of fragrant hops and lots of creamy malts, some funky hop notes. The flavor is smooth, balanced, a bit much bitterness and, uh, "californianess" to it. Decent body and mouthfeel though. Good!

This bottled brew from 2005 was bought and sampled in 2006 in Indianapolis. It poured an extremely large sized head of foamy mostly lasting fine to medium sized white colored bubbles that left behind a slightly hazy softly carbonated orange colored body with a fine particulate in it and a poor lacing. The aroma was hoppy malty and had a mild caramel note to it. The mouth feel was tingly from the start and strengthened in the finish then mellowed in its aftertaste with a mild malt hop flavor. Overall, the flavor was hoppy with a malty aftertaste.

Hazy orange body, medium off-white head. Big Amarillo hops aroma, citrusy, with a touch of pine, and bready malts. Bready, toasty, caramely body , light tartness, with plenty of grapefruit rind and pine. A touch earthy. In the APA "Harvest Ale" vein. Medium-bodied, rindy finish. This was well-made but it’s not quite my thing. The hops are already fading into biscuity malt, which makes drinking this ASAP a priority. Though I wasn’t overwhelmed, Stone continues to produce a quality product for a reasonable price.

Bottle (Courtesy of Hogtownharry): Poured a clear golden color ale with a huge pure white creamy and foamy head with good lacing and retention. Aroma of citrus hops is quite dominant but also enjoyable. Taste is quite different from other beers I’ve tasted before and can be describe like a wheat Indian ale. Dominant citrusy hops over a light wheat base beer. Very interesting concept that could have been even more interesting if the beer had been less dominant on hops.
