SuzyGreenberg (1318), Seattle, Washington, USA Sep 29, 2009 draft @ Brouwer’s Stout Night to start SBW - jet black with trace tan head; tons of bourbon upfront on the nose with a trace of bitter chocolate; flavor wise it was more balanced with sticky texture and raw, bitter chocolate; pretty nice, but a little much on the bourbon and it didn’t really stand a chance next to the founders canadian riversideAK (2648), Shoreline, Washington, USA Sep 14, 2009 Stone bourbon 12th strong sweet bourbony nose. Sweet vanilla with underlying notes of bittersweet chocolate. Black pour with t thinbeige head lots of lace. Bourbon sweet, tons of it, some roast and chocolate underneath but barrrel overwhelms. Weird aspartame mouth feel underneath. A little thinned out. Hella damn boozy. Sweet whiskey notes. Lingering vanilla notes light roast.
Would prefer more velvetty mothfeel.
scrizzz (1246), kirkland, Washington, USA Jun 14, 2009 Dense heavy black, sweet weighted aroma of burnt grain, topsoil and charcoal. Sublime character of perfectly coaxed out bourbon, charred oak and a touch of cream. snakeoilpete (324), Seattle, Washington, USA Jun 11, 2009 On tap at Brouwer’s Back in Black Stout Fest for SBW. Pours black with a decent light brown head. Smells and tastes like tart oak, leather, tobacco, and cherry, in addition to the typical roasty coffee/chocolate stout notes. Good stuff- I liked it a little better than the bourbon IRS but not as much as the Founders Canadian Breakfast.
Rciesla (3500), Exit 15W, New Jersey, USA May 21, 2009 EBF. Pours a black body with a tan head. Minor bourbon and vanilla and a lightly roast y character to it. Hops are subdued and the chocolate is a little more alcoholic. A good brew for sure. I liked it better than the original offering. cprochak (387), Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, USA May 13, 2009 Draft at Brouwer’s Back in Black ’09. Bourbon dominates the aroma with maple and caramel slightly hidden and a touch of chocolate. Pours jet black with a dark tan head. Bourbon is slightly overpowering, but there are nice chocolate undertones to balance. A very rich full-bodied bear with some great roasted malts. Slightly bitter finish for balance. Great beer, but the Russian Imperial is better in my opinion. after4ever (2711), Brier, Washington, USA May 10, 2009 Updated: May 11, 2009Draft at Brouwer’s. Jet black. Loose caramelly burnt-tan ring. Big bourbon and maply nose. That combination gives it a sourness that’s almost salty. Big, thick, creamy body. Roasty, tons of char, some maple syrup, burnt toast, and sharp dark-roasted coffee beans, along with a bit of bourbon and vanilla. Nice, but still young and raw. gracefullypunk (272), Washington, USA May 10, 2009 Loved this one. Went to Brouwer’s stout night with this as my first choice, as I love bourbon aged stouts. Great looking, near black with a tan creamy head that leaves lots of lacing. Aroma is malty, caramel, toasted vanilla, and a slight cherry--no soap whatsoever. The bourbon and caramel balanced very well together, creating a very smooth taste, sweet but with a slight bitter finish to round it out.
