OSLO (614), Minnesota, USA Jun 4, 2008 [Handbottle, thanks for bottling, Stine and huge thanks go to tytoanderso for acquiring the growler!] Pours black with a good tan head. Aroma is fairly nice, if not simple, with a lot of coconut from the bourbon, chocolate, and a hint of roasted malt. Taste is really lacking. I just had the regular RIS last night and all of the complexity and subtle nuances that I loved with that one have been flattened out and overpowered by the bourbon. Just like in the aroma, there is still a little chocolate and roasted malt, but very little else is evident. Medium-thin mouthfeel with a long finish where the roasted malt shows up most strongly. Really, 95-100 percentiles for this and the Mikkeller Black? I feel like I’m taking crazy pills when I look at the high scores. This was not good, and it’s sad because the regular RIS really is a quality beer.
Ungstrup (11353), Frederiksberg, Denmark Sep 29, 2008 To celebrate my rating number 11,300 I enter this much sought after top-50 beer. A pitch black beer with a thin brown head. The aroma is sweet malty with notes of roasted malt and bourbon. The flavor is sweet with strong notes of bourbon as well as medium notes of wood, roasted malt, and alcohol, leading to a dry roasted finish. The alcohol burns in the top of the throat. maniac (2022), Richmond, Virginia, USA Sep 28, 2008 On tap at the Stone Brewing World Bistro & Gardens on 08/03/2008 on day three of RBSG 2008. 2007 Vintage. Dark black body with a small brown head. Big bourbon aroma, with some roasted malt and caramel. Vanilla bourbon flavor with rich roasted malt and caramel. Full body with moderate carbonation. nqualls (420), Tennessee, USA Sep 27, 2008 On tap at the bistro a little while back. Poured an obsidian black with a two finger brown head. Aroma of oak, bourbon, chocolate. Flavor had vanilla notes along with the aromas from above. Full bodied with soft carbonation and a creamy mouthfeel. miketd (372), Cleveland, Ohio, USA Sep 22, 2008 Thanks to kmweaver for sharing. Pour is black with a small brown head. Subtle bourbon and chocolate aroma. Flavor is slightly boozy and roasted chocolate. Bitter. Thin body. Not liking this one too much, but would like to give it another try. JMFG (1173), Florida, USA Aug 23, 2008 On tap @ Stone, RBSG. Stark black pour, light tan head that dissipates quickly. The aroma is surprisingly balanced between bourbon, oak, roast, and alcohol, none of them overpowering. The barrel is more apparent in the taste, but still allows the chocolate and roast, plus some vanilla, to come through. Creamy palate. Excellent.
