Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Bottle compliments of Indiana Red: Clear gold with white ring head. This reminds me of Urthel’s Hop It, but way better. The aroma is a battle between huge hops and funky Belgian yeast. The flavor has a flowery hop taste with an English Breakfast tea aftertaste. Smooth and thin finish which leaves a solid hop coating on your tongue. Nice.

Pours a very nice yellow/golden color with a decent fluffy white head and nice carbonation out of my Sam Adams Sensory glass. Smell is of the typical pine and citrus hops with a belgian yeast character of breadiness. Taste is closer to a tripel than any IPA, it isn’t very hoppy but obviously that’s a part of the style. Has small hints of spice and clove. Mouth is medium and carbonation is high. Probably wouldn’t get this one again, but it was nice to try this once.

Bottle. Pours a golden amber with a thick white head. Super citrus hop aroma (Centennial hops?) just bursting out of the glass with some malt sweetness and Belgian esthers, peppery notes. Light crisp malt body with a big citrus, Belgian funk and tart dry body. A unique twist on a Stone classic.

[2381-20090801] Sample. Ivy greenery aroma has some floral and spice notes. Hazy, light brown body with a long-lasting foamy white head and nice lacing. Nice spicy yeast flavour with a mild burnt straw notes. Medium body. Good.

Pours golden amber with a ton of dense white head. Sweet citruc hop aroma, very sweet and faintly piney (surprise), but not as sharp or spikey as some other Stone IPA offerings. There is a really nice peach/pineapple scent that I can also pick up. The first taste is actually pretty faint on the flavor side. I get a lot of hop and malt, but almost no citrus until later in the palate. Creamy mouthfeel and lasting taste are impressive. I almost prefer this to some of the other Stone offerings in this style. It is somehow smoother and more balanced, to my taste, than the regular IPA. Good stuff here, but not strikingly Belgian in nature, at least not to me...
