Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Appearance is a hazy yellow with a significant white head. Aroma is mostly hops but not intense. Flavor is also a bit of a subdued version of their IPA. There’s some sweetness in the finish, but I’d say this is more IPA than Belgian, but I think that’s by design. Overall, quite pleasant especially if you’d like a less intense version of the Stone IPA.

I like this idea and others like it that I have had from other brewers, though this one fell a bit flat for me. Very fruity aroma with a more mild bit of yeastiness. Spices come through more in the flavor but hops dominate. I would have enjoyed a bit more of the Belgium side of the equation.

A more subdued version of the Stone IPA. But not really. Still packs a whallop of hops, and is dry and resiny, and bitter. Doesn’t seem too Belgian to me, but it is tempered with sweetness maybe just a tad more than the regular IPA. Pretty good.

Draft. Pours a hazy gold with a small, foamy white head. The head has solid staying power. The nose is an interesting mix of hops featuring soap, oranges, yeast, and floral notes. Medium-high carbonation with a medium-light mouthfeel. The palate seems to be similar to the nose with a good dose of bittering hops thrown in. Floral notes, oranges, and yeast on the tongue. Some pineapple and fruitiness emerge as the beer warms. Medium-long finish with some lingering hop bitterness. For me this one was unique, but not as great as either might be alone. Sort of a 1+1=1.75.

On tap. Clear deep golden with a creamy off-white head that leave broad curtains of lacework. Aroma of yeast and fruit. Medium body, very fruity, some yeast. Late comes some citrusy hops that leave a dry finish with a light bitterness. A rare US/Belgo hybrid, that actually works. 070709

Tap @ OBF... Poured orange with a thick white head, nice retention. Hoppy aroma. Well carbonate and foamy palate. Hoppy up front with a leafy, herbal character. Crisp finish. Well balanced with malts. A zesty yeast character that gives at the Belgian feel.

22oz bomber (Best by 09 05 09) served in a shaker. This beer poured a glowing amber with a light haze and a lasting one-finger thick head of beige foam. Excellent lacing. The aroma had tangerines, tropical fruit, and pine accented by some spicy and fruity yeast esters. Also some strong toffee and graham cracker. The flavor had crisp citrus and tropical fruit on top of strong graham cracker. Also a bit of pepper and spicy yeast. A nice, even bitterness. Medium-bodied mouthfeel with light carbonation. The yeast definately brings some tripel characteristics into the mix, but the heavy-handed hopping leaves no doubt that this is an IPA. I like it.
