Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

Very strong, grassy and not overwhelmingly hoppy, IPA. Stone has done well here to make something without a mallet. Nice job.

Draught at the Stone Company Store, thanks to Phil (I had to get something extra for asking all of those intelligent questions on the tout, right?). Fruity and yeasty aroma with bubblegum and banana evident. This shows up in the flavor as well, but the rest is all Stone IPA. Nice, but not quite as good as the original.

Poured from a bottle. Aroma- Piney hops, hop resin. A biscuit aroma and berry-like esters exist to a lesser degree. Appearance- Gold in color. Good clarity with a strong, white head. Taste- Very high bitterness, fruity esters, low malt background. It is spicy, which I think is phenols combined with the hop bitterness. Palate- Bitterness detracts from mouthfeel, high carbonation. Overall- I didn’t get a big Belgian presence in this beer. The bitterness could have been reared in a bit to show off other flavors.

This bear is weird. I like what they are trying to do but here it just didn’t work. Citrus hops, yeast, they fought each other instead of complimenting.

Bomber. Huge hoppy nose, big citrus (lemon zest mostly, with orange and grapefruit) and pine, just lusciously juicy and lightly musty in the hop department. Peach and light lychee. Rich, clear sunshine-golden pour with a great rocky white head. Taste is dry and musty, light yeast, exquisite hoppiness with big breadiness and citrus accents. Caramel is subdued, strange for Stone but a good thing, as it just wouldn’t work here. Faint spice. Smooth medium body with a smidgen of resin and strain-to-sense it alcohol. I love this sucker, a nice, simple hybrid we should all be homebrewing, just dry and balanced with tons of aromatics.

Bomber. Yep, it’s an IPA with Belgian yeast, Stone style. What more is there to say? Tasty, but not stellar.

Bottle. Orange amber pour. Short white head leaves spotty lacing on the tulip glass. Aroma is big floral hops, citrus oils, orange peel, sweet malt, yeast notes and light spice. Almost some ginger as well. Taste is strong floral hops, citrus juice, orange zest, yeast notes, light caramel, sweet malt and spices. Body is medium with a full carbonation. Ends with more flowery hops, orange peel, grapefruit juice, yeast and sweet malt. OK, but not really my cup of tea.

The pour is golden-orange, with a floral, grapefruit, hoppy aroma. The taste has a medium hops bite, with a flowery, alcohol, and not real exciting yeast flavor. Sadly, this didn’t impress me very much. I might have been expecting too much from Stone, though.
