Commercial Description:
When reading the name “Stone Cali-Belgique IPA”, “Cali” hints that it is a California style IPA, and this brew has an undeniable Belgian influence, indicated by the word “Belgique” (which is how Belgium’s French-speaking population says the word “Belgian”; the Dutch speaking Belgians say “Belgie”). We carefully selected a Belgian yeast strain that illuminates a fascinating new aspect of the beer that is otherwise quite simply Stone IPA.

The result is both completely new and different, while still being recognizable as a Stone Brew – and Stone IPA in particular. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

bottle - Pours copper-yellow and mostly clear with a big off white head that leaves some lacing. The aroma is of citrus hops with Belgian yeast underlying it that includes a suggestion of banana. It tastes aggressively hopped. There’s no mistaking the west coast IPA style. There’s some good citrus to go with the crisp bitterness. It’s medium to full bodied and has a long, bitter finish. I’d be curious to try this one side by side with their regular IPA. For me the Belgian yeast was apparent in the aroma, but not much in the flavor where the huge hops dominated.

Could of called it Arrogant Belgian Bastard. Califfornia meets Belgium in a bottle. Nice citric hops with the belgian yeast. Very refreshing, yet a little heavy. Would be interesting with hearty foods.

On tap at the Fort Worth Flying Saucer. Smells like dried, rotten vegetation. Tastes is dry and slightly hoppy. Spinach. This was ridiculously creamy, though.

Clear burnt orange hue with a creamy coating head. Looks like a nitrous head from appearances. Has the strident hops you have come to expect from Stone. Also has some fruity esters. Very creamy mouthfeel. Taste is a continuous struggle between hop bitterness and Huggies baby wipes. Citrus element takes a backseat here. Finish maintains a strong hopped bitter with the alcohol hitting the roof of the palate. Very different for an American IPA.

Opaque amber appearance with a medium size white head and very good lacing. Aroma waffles between piney hops and the funkiness of the yeast. Resin and citrus hops dominate the taste while the yeast yields some spicyness and earthy notes. Some noteworthy twists on their traditional IPA, though not quite as assertive (wish I had one now to taste side by side). Overall, interesting, complex, delicious.

Draught. At Cole’s, Buffalo NY. Slightly hazy gold pour with an average lasting white head. Somewhat sweet aroma - candi - very, very pungently bitter - sharp gingery/spicy Belgian yeast and grassy vaguely citrus (zest) -y west coast bitterness - moderate, noticeable alcohol presence - sort of a grassy witbier on steroids. The taste follows - a little jagged and lacking in cohesion, but the elements are all appealing to me - spicy, sweet, and more C-hop character than the nose - average body, extremely lively mouthfeel, with a dry, medium-long bitter/spicy finish. Mmmmm - I liked it! (update - had a sample from a bottle recently, too - hoppier than on tap - I liked it a bit more on draught).

Thanks to the Tampa Crew for the sample. Pours clear gold with a white head. Nose is caramel, malt, pine, white grapefruit, and a light malt backbone. Flavor is pine, pine, slight bitterness, white grapefruit, and a medium malt presence with a lingering bitterness. Interesting beer hopped to Hades.
