muzzlehatch (4424), Burlington, Vermont, USA Jan 13, 2008 22 ounce bottle from City Market in Burlington, VT (January 2008), consumed at cellar temperature from a Maudite glass. A moderately large, tight-bubbled dark tan head surmounts the quite opaque ebon body, decaying quite slowly and leaving minimal lacing....licorice-touched toffee in the aroma, inviting and sweet enough, but rather on the weak side; as it warms some faint coffee notes creep in....rather more character for the tongue to absord; on the bitter-robust side for a foreign stout, with fruitiness/vinous qualities somewhat muted and a dark tarry bitterness really carrying through the finish....a bit of tart cherry shows through as well; finish is quite bitter and hard indeed, body is reasonably full but could be heftier yet to support all that roughness....still, a reasonably interesting bottle.
BigBen2120 (540), Gardiner(52 miles from Allagash), Maine, USA Jul 2, 2008 22oz bomber from Ron’s Market in Farmington. A somewhat vigorous pour yields a good half inch of short-lived tan head resting on a nearly opaque black body with very slight ruby-red highlights. Smells nutty, with black licorice, and a slight roast. Tastes like black licorice with burnt paper and chocolate in the background. Flavors are kind of muted, and the licorice clearly dominates. Medium bodied with moderate carbonation. Easy enough to drink considering the mouth feel and abv, but I must say I am not overall very impressed with this one... Oakes (6784), Miami Beach, Florida, USA Jul 2, 2008 Pretty close to black. Aroma is molassesy, slightly fruity with a hint of roastiness. Rich molasses, some light burnt cashew notes. Very slight fruitiness. Big chewy rich molassesy finish, again with a hint of acridity from the roast, almost like a roast chicory. Imaena (160), Portland, Maine, USA Jul 2, 2008 Bottle form Whole Foods 08’.
Black pour. Hop forward stout with intense coffee and chocolate flavors developing. Very interesting . Pwn3d (578), NYC, New York, USA May 17, 2008 Pours light for a stout, more of a brown color. Very balanced. Hoppy bitter finish, not overbearing. Pleasantly surprised, a very drinkable stout. LooseCannon (581), Norfolk, Virginia, USA Apr 30, 2008 22oz bottle. Pours pitch black in color with brown head. Aroma roasted coffee and dark chocolate. Taste coffee, roasted coffee and dark chocolote with dry finish.
