CaptainCougar (5379), Rockville, Maryland, USA Feb 5, 2005 Sampled at the 2005 EBF: Pours a dark brown with a light tan head. Aroma is mild for an imperial with some light caramel and roasted malts. Sweet, malty, lightly acidic body has a milk chocolate raisin finish that hides the alcohol fairly well. An ok beer, but needs more complexity, darkness, and body to be more of an imperial stout. tiggmtl (4307), Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada Feb 1, 2005 Perfume-like sweetness in the aroma with a hint of something burnt and salty. Opaque brown body with decent tan head that diminishes to thin ring. Very sweet and fruity with some roastiness towards the finish but not enough to take the edge off the sweetness. Vegetal aftertaste. Medium-full body is a bit still in the mouth. Sampled at the Extreme Beer Festival 2005. Rastacouere (5551), Montréal, Quebec, Canada Jan 31, 2005 Draft, EBF: Almost black, not much head. Bizarre aroma containing a strong vegetal note in the form of olive oil, soy sauce and vinous tartness that luckily doesn’t come back in the taste. Very vegetal taste, rather oxidized nature, lots of grapes bring a sturdy vinous side, especially paired with more than restrained roastiness. I wonder if I would even have known this was an imperial stout blind. Lighter bodied than most. Poor example imo. MartinT (5030), Montreal, Quebec, Canada Jan 31, 2005 Sample at XBF:
The Lure: Raisins within the sugary play dough, burnt sesame idly floating in a drop of soy sauce. Alcohol sometimes pushes through garrulously, but all is thankfully wearing a half-veil.
The Festivities: Quirky fish sauce and silky milkiness garnish the black beans. Sweet alcohol runs amock in this, just not a pleasant blend of flavors.
