french oaked cask at papago 11/8/2009. dark woody brown colored pour with the traditional soft cask head which is shade of beige. the nose is extremely floral. it’s jam packed with vanilla and wood notes while the db sits somewhat quietly in the background... dust, spicy hops, grass, brown sugar and some faint citrus. normally, db is far too sweet and syrupy for me to enjoy. but this, this is incredible! tons of hoppy dryness balances out the massive caramel malt. vanilla richness and depth complements notes of spice, brown sugar, soft wood, grass, flowers and a dry finish. pine shows up as it warms and lingers in the aftertaste. the mellow cask texture really suits this... otherwise it might come off too brash or alcoholic. 8/4/8/4/17/4.1

On tap, listed as 2006 French Oaked Double Bastard. Pours with a huge, fluffy, off-white head and a hazed amber body. Amazing lace. Aroma of caramel, dark fruits, toffee, vanilla and oak. Taste is cotton candy, fruit, oak, toffee and light flan. Nicely aged. Syrupy mouthfeel, delicious!

Sampled on cask @ Papago. Didn’t come close to living up to expectations. The traditional Double Bastard is so tasty, wanted additional complexity and it missed the mark. Aroma and flavor possess more wood when warmed but not the brown sugar, vanilla, and dark fruit that the original expressed. Nice 1/2 inch latte head sits above a garnet body but he carbonation in the mouth is lacking. Good not great.

on cask at papago. pours a deep reddish brown with a creamy tan head. aroma is caramel malt faded hops vanilla oak and brown sugar. flavor is faded hops supple oak and vanilla oak rasins brown sugar. creamy slick mouthfeel and the vanilla and oak linger with the faded hops in the finish.

2006 French Oak Aged version on tap at Stone Bistro. Hazy amber in color with a medium cream-colored head and good lacing aroma. Aroma is oak, citrus hops, caramel, and toffee. Flavor is oaky with loads of caramel malt, toffee, and brown sugar, along with some dark fruits and vanilla. Very tasty. Palate is medium-full with lively carbonation. Not boozy in the least. An incredible beer overall.

06 vintage at blind lady during sd beer week: pours beautiful...dark cream/tan head...lacey as fuck atop a opaque orange tinted body..orgasmic nose of wood, vanilla, aged malt and booze. Creamy flavors bursting with vanilla and oak, whipped cream, slight anise, pinch of cocoa powder, and candy...sweet, creamy, delightful beer candy. Seriously, stone should discontinue every one of their beers and just sell this, in great quantities.

Red colour, little bit of wood on the nose. Lots of malt, oak, quick finish, little bit of lingering oak, dry. Pretty good overall, compliments the double bastard pretty well.
