Pours fresh from growler an orange-red color with generous fluffy white head. It’s on the paler side for a barley wine. Aroma of hops (pine, tropical fruit) along with some weaker malt notes. The flavor is a well-balanced mixture of hoppy bitterness and sticky malty caramel sweetness. The hops re-emerge in the finish which is mostly bitter and also has a slightly alcohol and earthy tone (like vegetables or even dirt). When it’s fresh like this, it reminds me of a less hoppy Arrogant Bastard. I should buy a bottle and age it a while and then re-rate. TheGB (41), Charlottesville, Virginia, USA
| 4 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | Oct 2, 2009 Pours a dark golden brown with a thin head. Aroma is of honey, barley and hops. Taste is slightly bitter at first, then layers of barley and malt and then fairly bitter hops on the finish. More abrasive to the palate than some barley wines. mrhoppy (209), Santa Clara, California, USA

| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 15/20 | Sep 22, 2009 Early 2009 vintage. Poured a clear, dark amber color. The head was tan and thick with small flecks of lacing. The aroma was malts, brown sugars and plenty of hops and alcohol heat. The flavor was hoppy too. Pine hops rolled over the softer citrus and caramel malts. Some alcohol. Not quite medium bodied. Almost hot at times. Young. yobdoog (1431), Woodridge NY, New York, USA
| 3.8 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 3/5 | 8/10 | 3/5 | 16/20 | Sep 21, 2009 Aroma is always huge. Ages well for a few years. Hops mellow as this seems to be a pretty hoppy barleywine when fresh. Aroma of molasses, caramel, pine hops and sweetness. Flavor is big, thick and rich with hops over the smooth caramel malts and sugar. Lots of alcohol on the finish, very hot, I prefer older bottles. CUJO (339), Brooklyn, New York, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Sep 19, 2009 sample: RNH: really nice brew, haven’t had too many of this style, but I need to get some more! Light blood in color, thin head. Immediate esters but in the "wine" sense, oily and subdued heat. I feel as though this beer should be left to warm, the sugars and malts I tasted were great, but immature if that makes any sense. Some minor notes of light sugars, slight bitters. Great brew.
