This is what a barleywine should taste like. instantly warming, long finish, caramel and bite. somewhat young and with a sneer, but lots of depth right off the shelf and it’s really hard to limit to a sip. | 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 17/20 | Feb 24, 2004 Beer pours quite orange in color with a medium sized off white head that is somewhat retained. Aroma is not huge by barleywine standards. Hints of toffee, ash, and alcohol. Flavor is where the action really picks up. Flavor is malty sweet on the front side, but the finish is the real eye opener. One of the strongest blast of grapefruit juice ever in the finish. Me thinks will definetely benefit from the cellar. golubj (1289), Sunnyvale, California, USA

Smooth mouthfeel with only a little carbonation. Taste was mainly of malt, some bitterness, a little too much alcohol in the aftertaste. Beerman6686 (1287), Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA
| 3.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 16/20 | May 6, 2008 Poured a murky brown caramel color with a white head. Aroma of caramel, hops, and alcohol. Flavor is very malty, not much hops to be seen which is surprising from Stone but still very good. guzzler67 (1283), Hanover, Maryland, USA
| 4.1 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 4/5 | 17/20 | Jan 13, 2007 Amber/orange appearance with an average size, off white head. Aroma starts resinous and citrusy, then a caramel malt and softer fruit nose emerges. Sweet malt taste does little to hide the alcohol. Flavors of ripe fruit and caramel gradually lose ground to a bitter, spicy hoppiness. Full bodied, decently carbonated mouthfeel leads to a bitter, lingering finish. awaisanen (1279), Irvine, California, USA

Describing the sweet aromas as cotton candy really nails this one on the head initially. Some vinous aromas of cherry and red grape skins also waft from my snifter. A bit of varnish like alcohol noted in the nose as well. Flavor is quite malty with a touch of bitter, piney hops saved for the last smack. Clean finishing, multi-layered beer with a carefully hidden wallop of alcohol. I’m looking forward to trying this again in another couple of years. aspidites (1274), manteca, California, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 4/5 | 14/20 | Mar 14, 2005 Biscuits and caramel nose with some hop oil. Mild citrus with some slight dark fruit and marzipan. Some sherry and brany notes with good vanilla. Mild bitterness with good resin on the palate. Some residual sweetness and mild roasted nuts at the finish with a final bitterness. Would like it to be much bigger. jrob21 (1271), Atlanta, Georgia, USA
