Smoky malty sweetness in the aroma. Chocolate and coffee show up along with the smoky malt in the flavor, just as Stone describes it. Finishes very smooth and comfortably dry. Pretty tasty. I love this beer. Another solid contribution from Stone! GranvilleTim (531), Granville, Illinois, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 7/10 | 3/5 | 7/10 | 3/5 | 17/20 | May 19, 2009 Thanks Daknole. Dark cola-brown pour with a tan head. Aroma of roasted malt, chocolate and some sweetness. Smokey taste hits you first as you sip the beer. Then you get the roasted malt and a little sweetness. Dry aftertaste. Very nice balanced beer. Nice lacing. Itzjerm (70), Harvest, Alabama, USA
| 1.9 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 3/10 | 3/5 | 5/10 | 3/5 | 5/20 | May 19, 2009 HEAVY smoke flavor. Not enjoyable... forced it down and poured some down the drain. I’ve had other smoked beers, and I have to admit i’m not a fan... lighter on the smoke than some, but still very overpowering... smokey bacon bitter hops... not for me. nathan30533 (166), Dahlonega, Georgia, USA
| 4.5 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 5/5 | 9/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 18, 2009 Little smoked taste. Good taste of coffee notes and chocolate. Very smooth. Wonderful pour. Dark with a lite brown/white head. Wonderful overall porter for a non drinking porter guy! MrRain (439), O’Fallon, Illinois, USA
| 4.3 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 8/10 | 5/5 | 18/20 | May 17, 2009 Bottle poured into an English pint. SSP pours very dark brown with a nicely sized head that settle pretty quickly. The aroma is mild with malt and faint wood smoke showing through. The body on this bad boy is more reminiscent of a stout than a porter, being thick and chewy. The carbonation is slightly elevated in this beer but not to its detriment. The hops don’t peak out, they JUMP out at you and take you by surprise for the style. The smokiness adds a great level of complexity without overshadowing the burnt malts, and sweet chocolate. I give this one two thumbs up. darbish (86), Portland, Oregon, USA
| 3.7 | Aroma | Appearance | Flavor | Palate | Overall | | 8/10 | 4/5 | 7/10 | 2/5 | 16/20 | May 17, 2009 smells like a campfire or burning cedar mixed with a mild sweet odor. is a very dark, somewhat translucent brown with beige head. tastes fairly sweet and has a very intense smoky flavor, imagine the comment i made about a campfire, then imagine eating that campfire. feels very thin in my mouth though, which is a bit of a disappointment i like my porters and stouts to have a little thicker viscosity. pretty good nonetheless. Needs to be accompanied with a T-bone steak. Pretty overwhelming smokiness mid-palate, but it has a smooth finish. Don’t know why such a good brewery is in San Diego, I lived there for 3 years, and almost everybody drinks heineken or corona, heathens. However, I have always got good head in SD ;) Buy it at World Market, and save $2.
