Commercial Description:
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

Attractive head with only a bit of tenacity. Very deep brown color. Aroma is a complex range of roasted malts and hops with a smoked presence and a high note of alcohol at the end. Medium body and surprisingly balanced. Flavor is complex with a slight sweetness of caramel as well as the bitterness of a moderate chocolate. Hop flavors blossom closer to the finish and provide a woody dryness that would make it an excellent pair for stronger entres.

At a tasting at Priscillas in Morehead City, NC. All I needed was a good cigar and my rocking chair! A dark pour with a great head that leads to an off white lacing. Aroma was smoky, could have been stronger. Taste offered smoke, chocolate and some coffee. Mouthfeel was wonderful. Can’t wait to drink the whole bottle by myself!

Pours dark black with a nice, foamy brown head. Beautiful, steady, permanent lacing that lingers down the glass. Great looking beer in the glass. Smells of weak malts -- no smokiness, no chocolate, nothing else. Very disappointing aroma. Flavor is lots of chocolate, ironically not very smokey at all. Digging deeper there is some dark fruit there. There’s a bit of a watery character to the beer as well. Unusually weak brew from Stone. Other reviews on this site rave, but I didn’t come away with a great experience from this beer.

Poured dark brown, close to black from bomber. Formed nice size off white foamy head, aroma of roasted malts, smokey chocolate cocoa beans and some coffee tones. Flavour much of the same, even a bit of hop type character under smoke taste. Not my fave style, but had to try it at Priscillas beer tasting in MHC. Thanks Matt and Ed.

Bomber: Pours brownish black with a tan head that lasts long enough to... blow your mind. Aroma of fall, light malt, leaves, sugar, mist, burning wood. Flavor is full and light. How do they do that. It tastes like smoke, malt, honey, sugar, cocoa, and goodness. Context is pure, clean, and smooth, lightly thick, and just the right amount of bite. This beer is better than the last 30 you’ve had. On Draught: Pours dark brown, almost black, with a 1/2" off-white head. Aroma is of wood, malt, and a hint of chocolate. Flavor is malty, with a little bit of bland cocoa. There is definitely the smoked wood taste present. Texture starts out lightly cremay then goes watery, like most porters. Lacing is intricate and frequent. Mouth feel has a distinctive bite that is on the borderline of good and too much bite. The pint has a gummy, slightly dry finish and a quick taste of coffee follwed by diluted sugar cream water milk flavor. No I am not there yet, that’s just exactly what it tastes like. The bottles version is slightly better than the draught version because out of the bottle, the beer is creamier and less harsh. The bottled version is markedly better than the draught version because out of the bottle, it is creamier and less harsh. Rating reflects draught version.
