Commercial Description:
A rich, dark and delicious porter with chocolate and coffee overtones accented by a subtle smokiness from just the right amount of peat smoked malt. Unlike a rauchbier, the "smoke" in Stone Smoked Porter is an ELEMENT of the character rather than being THE character. -- Greg Koch, Stone Brewing Co.

22 oz Bottle -- Pour black with a thick tan head. Aromas of nutmeg, coffee, chocolate, caramel, and some smoke. The smoke is much more pronounced in the flavor of the beer. Large amounts of bitter chocolate and hops form a bitter back end that lasts and lasts.

Serving: 22 oz. bottle. Appearance: Black with slight ruby highlights and a huge, creamy, light tan head. Great head retention and great lacing. Aroma: Pine hops, light caramel, soap, and a bit of smoke. A much lighter nose than I was expecting. Flavor: Bitter pine hops, licorice, and light fruit notes. A bit of chocolate emerges as the beer warms. Kind of anticlimactic. Good, but not great. Palate: Medium-high carbonation with a medium-rich mouthfeel and a long bitter finish. Overall: Worth a try but I would call this one a bit overrated. Take it or leave it.

Poured from bottle into Nonic Imperial Pint. An exceedingly dark brownish-red that remains slightly transparent. Massive foamy head with major lacing. Aroma of smoke, caramel and roasted malts, cherry. Definitely can taste the smoke, almost a charbroiled taste. Slightly sweet chocolate malts and fruit are balanced by roasted malts and hop bitterness. Different facets of the taste shine more than others dependent on the temperature. Low to moderate carbonation, medium body, quite smooth and dry on the finish. Very flavorful porter that insists you keep drinking, although the flavor overload may eventually wear thin. One of the best porters I have had.

Pours dark black with a huge tan head. The aroma is sweet chocolate and coffee with just an edge of smoke. Bitter, earthy, light smoke and coffee. Nice hint of sweet mid palate. Finishes clean and not cloying. Great by itself or with any smoked meats.

On tap at the porter tasting at Blacklick Wine & Spirits on 10/22/09. Dark brown pour with a medium tan head. Malty aroma with some bread, smoke and hops. Flavor is chocolate malt with a bit of apple and a smoky finish. Not overdone on the smoke, which is nice.

(Draught) Deep dark brown and clear. Medium sized white head. Smoke and roastedness in aroma. Full bodied palate with medium carbonation. Smoke, malts, roastedness, grilled sausage, bitterness and lightly coffee in taste. Bitterness and smoke in aftertaste. Nice one.
